The raw DVD decrypter leaves should be huge. If you use DVDShrink, it will let you navigate the various menus, extras, etc. and compress the crap out of them, replace them with a static image, or you can get advanced and just include the main movie and nothing else (including menus - put in DVD, movie plays). When you click the "Backup" button, you'll get a dialog that lets you pick the location to burn them to - you can pick a hard drive folder. Once that is done, make sure to delete the source folder and clear out the temp folder where shrink does it's work. You can get most movies down to 4.5GB, many are much smaller without all of the extra crap - with sound and main video, maybe 3GB.

CRAP. Even with a DVD that has only been played once I get to like 85% and then I get those sectors can't be read message. Any idea? Is it my burner?

Yes. I've never had a disc that failed after wiping off the boogers of the person that had it before me...

Definitely could be - most manufacterers have very simple BIOS flash updates now.

You can also check http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php for your particular drive and find some really great hacked firmwares and info on your particular drives known performance. I run a hacked firmware on my drive that let's it burn at full speed on any media, which actually works, increases the ripping speed, and gets rid of that annoying region checking.

I have Nero 6 Ultra Edition, which can convert AVI to DVD. But there are a TON of apps to do it. I had a lot of issues with the complexity of making sure sound stayed in synch with video, and Nero did that EASILY and FLAWLESSLY, so I've stayed with it for a year, don't know if something has come about for free that's as good.
