We got our parents a DVD player for Christmas. I thought it would be so easy for them, just pop in the dvd and push play, but we've had nothing but problems. Put in Kate and Leopold and it was in director's cut mode. We didn't put it that way it was like that from the get go. went to menu and turned it off, started the movie again and the stupid director comes back on talking.

Popped in Spiderman and no sounds come on while it's playing. Had to go to menus and reset it. Then half way during the movie it freezes up. These are brand new dvd's, is there something wrong with the player? My parents can't handle trying to figure this stuff out when i'm not there so they probably won't use it cause it will be too much trouble for them.

any ideas what might be the problem?

Seriously, do you think it's the player?

at first, i was thinking they were doing this to all the new movies so you would have to check out all the features on the menus.

The problem is, my brother did the actual buying and they live 4 hrs. away. I think they got it from Circuit City, though, think we could take it to our Circuit City and trade it for another one?

oh, and thanks for your help :)

Definitely take it back if its from Circuit City or a big retailer like that. Two reasons: 1) its no problem to take it back and that way you can make sure its the player not the DVDs (doesn't sound like its the DVDs). and 2) we had a Sony DVD player for about a year and a half and it just froze during a movie like yours did (at the most suspensful part too). Tried to get it fixed but it was cheaper just to buy a new one. The repair guy told me that after awhile the lasers become mis-aligned. Maybe the player you got is a little off. With the receipt it shouldn't be a problem at all. Maybe give a sob story about your parents too ;) that might help.

Same thing happend to me with my first one. Don't even chance it. Take it back now. Mine gave me all sorts of problems for about a year and then it went bad. I to went to get it fixxed and they told me the samething about being cheaper to by a new one. HPCatFan, I think my old one was a Sony also. Sounds like a bad batch came off the line.

Hey, doesn't ciruit city have that commercial where you don't need your reciept cause they keep all your purchases on record or something like that. I guess i should just email my bro and get the reciept (if he kept it  ).

My parents really didn't want one, but we kept telling them how much easier dvd's where and they would love them and then this happens~

    Thanks for yer help :1luvu:

What's so funny is that i bought myself one months ago for like $65. I got a real cheap one made by Mintek. My brother didn't want to go that route, He chose this one cause it cost more and it's been nothing but problems. I've never had any problems with mine. I tried to tell him just to get one that would be easy for our parents to use, but brothers don't listen

No doubt, and it was one of the best Sony's when we bought it too ($250 if I remember right, in late 2000). Now we've got a Toshiba progressive scan, its better and almost half the cost.

Buy a Sony and stay away from the brands you have never heard of before. You'll be better off.

I got a combo RCA DVD/VCR player from RADIO SHACK before Xmas . . . . List price at RCA.com was $349, but they were selling it for $199. They were temporarily out of them, but they said I could pick it up at Radio Shack, who was selling it for $249 (they matched the price). I've had no problems with it so far   . .
