you should really specialize more. i have 6-8 levels in ranged, melee, and nature magic, and a few points spent on some of the basic skills, but for the most part, i'm combat magic all the way. it was a late shift, but well worth it.

i started out concentrating on fire and then a spent a little bit on lightning (for the arcing skill). i didn't want to go with death magic for purely aethetic reasons. if you mouse over the energy orb special, it will tell you what levels you need in the other skills (i think it's two on the fire chain -- the one that gives you more damage from fire and the one that gives you more damage from all combat magic). i think you need 8 levels in each to get to level 3 in enrgy orb, but i could be wrong. and they have to be natural levels, not levels from items.

i was also lucky enough to get a whole set of chaos... stuff (obviously i'm a little vague on the names here). it gives levels to various combat magic skills and an overall +2 to all combat magic skills. i think i had a couple other items that boosted some combat magic skills as well. this is what sort of pushed me towards death magic. and once i did it, my character was practically invincible.

buy the spells you need. don't wait to find one. i went with drown because i have an ice elemental pet.

i can't remember which death spell i use. it's not one of the skull ones. it's probably just to highest level, single target, death spell. soul lance maybe? or is that diablo 2?

i guess one of the things about this game that was the same with the first one is that they'e got too many shades of gray. so many that i don't bother getting used to something because as soon as i have, i get rid of it for something else. i think that's why i can't remember any of the names of things here. or maybe it's the pot.
