An anchor is what you need. I had the same problem. For whatever reason, the anchors I bought from Lowe's absolutely did not work. I bought some anchors from IKEA to hang one of their curtain products; the anchors were slightly different but worked like a charm. They're all I use for that sort of thing now...

I don't understand this. Does that wing thing go through the hole and push back against the drywall?

Seems the hole would have to be bigger than the screw to get that in the wall.
    Please advise...this is bothering me.

    This thread is funny.

The ONLY wall anchor you should ever use. Hollow anchor, the basket (spines) expands back against the drywall like a collapsing basket. I will not even attempt an install without these. If these do not work for you then you have fucked up.

    you're welcome

I agree, although once you already fuck up, these are no good for the gaping hole that now exists.

It's just sheet rock. Move the damn towel bar up or down an inch or so and try again and then spackle over and sand the old hole. I've never fucked up anything I could fix. The trick is to make as small and entry hole as possible (16p nail hole) and VERY carefully and slowly tap the anchor through leaving the screw in the anchor. And don't drive the 16p nail through like you are framing either, it will blow out the back of the sheet rock.
