I got a 9800 pro and put it on the ultra high setting. It gave me some warning about needing 500 MB of memory for textures, but I got a gig so I fired it up. Only problem I see so far is during "transitions"; i.e., when I open a door, seems like it freezes up for a sec. I may jack it back down to high later on. Anybody try multiplayer yet? I tried and it never connected.

yeah, that's 512 of TEXTURE memory -- ie a 512Mb graphics card. they put that in probably for screen shot purposes and for when those cards eventually come out. the freezes you get are when textures get cached back and forth to the card.

It is freaky. Voice whispering "help me" or "it took my baby"... that maniacal laugh.

I can play for about and hour then I gotta go do something else :)

i went with the DVD torrent version (not an official version, just everything put into one install). it took overnight, but no biggy.

the install jacks up on it, tho (it asks for cd #2). you end up just having to copy the files (doom3.exe and base/*) and go from there. no registry crap. no dll's. no big deal there.

the audio glitch is killing me, tho. i read that doom 3's audio is all in software which means i don't think it's a driver thing or sound card thing. it stutters and repeats and then skips -- namely when people are talking. real drag. anybody else experience anything like this?

    edit:

oh yeah, and are lightbulbs unheardof on mars or something? christ.
