I just finished watching this movie for the second time, and I gotta say, this movie is great. I highly recommend it.

okay, so i just watched this tonight.

pretty interesting and extremely captivating. but i'm left wondering quite a bit about the whole story. i think the mark of a good story is being able to "unwind it" and have it still make sense. i can't figure out how to unwind this one. so little is explained of the paradigm that i can't put the pieces together cuz i don't even know what the pieces are.

anybody think they really understand this flick? i'd love to see if there's something i'm missing or if it's really just a sort of symbolic "make of it what you will" story.

Strange but interesting. I only saw it once, so I forgot a lot of the details.

IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE AND YOU WANT TO SEE IT, WHY ARE YOU READING THIS THREAD?!?!?! DON'T GET MAD AT ME IF YOU READ A SPOILER!

okay, now that's out of the way... yeah, i think that's probably true, but everything is undone in the end. i think part of the theme is the whole "replacing dark parts with happiness" bit he gets into with his girlfriend....

something that's shown in the deleted scenes is that his pills are placebos. also, they explore they get more into the agnostic vs atheist angle -- as tho the movie itself is a movie about finding god.

I also wonder if it runs along the theory of when something that is supposed to happen doesn't, it causes a wrinkle in space-time.... thus opening a portal above his town. I just have trouble connecting the ghost of a dead guy with time travel.

yeah, but the problem is that things aren't returned to "normal" by the end of the movie (a la the butterfly effect -- which, incidentally, has a MUCH better ending in the director's cut than in the theatrical release). that is the theme for that movie -- that playing with fate has unintended consequences.

the end of donnie darko is donnie being killed by a jet airplane engine that falls from the future. did that happen because he messed up the future? that seems a little strange because that was the initial incident that sort of brought about the whole ability to affect the future to begin with. it doesn't seem cosmically justified. still the anomoly of the jet engine exists and you'd think it wasn't "supposed" to happen any more than the rest of the shit that happens in the movie.

    crazy.

one question. if frank drops off donnie's sister in the "real world", then how is it that he's home having just dreamed about the whole tangent universe?
