KFFL is reporting that the Bucs are looking to trade Donnie Abraham to the Jets for a 3rd rounder. Keep in mind his cap number is about $4 million right now, but they can restructure the deal prior to or after the trade to lower his cap number. Given that we only have one experienced CB now I would perfer this guy instead of Starks.

Brian Kelley bumped him from the starting line-up and we wouldn't have to give up a draft pick to get him. Personally, I think we should be after Tom Knight. He doesn't get many picks, but teams tend to shy away from him because of his cover skills, his man can't get open. Plus, Knight should be had fairly cheap.

this team is going to build through the draft. it's a refreshing change, i think.

the only trades i think you'll see are going to be for more panthers picks.

CB is one area I think we should address, in part, through FA. I like Knight the best due to his likley cost, but there are others out there that would step in and be productive starters...and fairly cheap.
Drafting a CB is crucial as well. I don't feel Anderson is of starter quality yet, getting a rookie to challenge for the position would be a good move. I picture the rookie and a FA starting w/ Anderson playing nickle.

yeah, i talked about it on another thread -- cornerback should be prority no. 1 right now. one (and possibly two) starters need to be found before august. one will come through the draft and i wouldnt be surprised if he's the panthers first pick.

Inter-conferance trades don't happen. They just don't. There will be no trades with Atlanta, New Orleans, or Tampa.

I'm just not that concerned about our secondary. If we end up with a guy like Fred Weary cheap and Anderson, fine with me. Going cheap with the secondary worked fine for the Saints. We just signed someone from Pitt. I'd like a corner somewhere in the draft, day one prefferablely, but keep in mind a lot of rookie corners take time to develop.

Start stopping the run. Get a pass rush. Those are the top 2 priorities in my mind, and have been. Then upgrade the rest, if need be.

  7. Agreed with Piper - stop the run, get a pash rush - and the need for velcro corners isn't as critical. If the QB is getting constant pressure, the routes get shorter, the amount of time a corner has to cover is reduced, and the value of an athletic corner that can break on the ball (instead of being glued to the WR) is critical.

I'd see what we could get for the second pick, but would prefer to get a pass rusher, Portis with our #2, and then a CB (if we get a high enough pick to trade down from Peppers).

i guess i'm coming at it from the other direction: get the corners to hold up the receivers and not let them break into a route with free hands and that buys the d-line as much time as they need to lay a hit on the passer.

that's been florida state's strategy for years and it's proven out in the nfl careers of the key players that the DBs were the real talent:

dbs: deion sanders, terrell buckley, samari rolle, shevin smith, clifton abraham, devon bush, tay cody, corey fuller, dexter jackson, mario edwards, leroy butler.

dline: jamal reynolds, tony bryant, corey simon, jerry johnson, orpheus roye, larry smith, greg spires.

also, i'm not saying avoid the line -- not at all. however, i think that both needs can be addressed with a trade down. get a corner, then a lineman. that'd be my ideal first round.
