Guess we'll find out soon if it was his attitude or aptitude for the game that held him back here. I was pretty high on the guy his rookie year and then a few folks pointed out his weakness(s) the second year, like getting off the line, getting open, etc... I agree-

He will be missed. I've always liked Hayes and hoped he could be great for the Panthers. I'm just not sure if it has been his lack of ability or lack of good coaching that's held him back. Hayes gone gives more PT to Byrd and possibly Smith, which I think is a good thing. Hopefully Jeffers is back to 100%, but if not, I think Byrd would also be a good #2 WR. He's certainly earned it.

I was more impressed with Byrd's effort last year than any receiever on our team at any position. Lets hope Mr. Dcoy has had some time to reflect this offseason since most think he aint going anywhere for a while.

I'd really like to see us bring someone that could push Moose back a notch (make him hungry again). I don't know where to peg Jeffers yet until I see him play again...

ESPN has him goin to New England too and they are given him way too much praise.

"the former University of Wisconsin star possesses prototype size for the modern game and he has deep speed as well."

"In the past two years Hayes, who drew considerable interest in the opening days of free agency, has started 30 games and combined for 132 catches, 1,855 yards and seven touchdowns.

Those numbers are even more impressive given that Hayes played with rookie quarterback Chris Weinke in 2001 and sore-armed and often-sacked Steve Beuerlein in 2000. As is their habit, the Patriots appear to have landed a player at the optimum juncture of his career and at a price that is relatively palatable."

Is he really as good as they are making it sound???

For the price, I'd say so.....when they are cheap as that, it's primarily upside.

Potentially, I think so. The odds are he has better days in front of him, not behind him. He is fast, big, and can leap. He's hauled in some catches. And if you look at the fact the team he played for has sucked, not him, then yea, he has star potential. They are really not paying him all that much. If he excels, they have a bargin, if they cut him, then not too much dead cap money. They probably could have gotten Cris Carter for less though, hehe

A 2yr. deal worth 4 million does sound like a deal the Panthers would be comfortable with. Maybe he just wanted out of Carolina. Him opposite Troy Brown does make for a very good receiver tandem along with David Patten.

I didn't think Hayes had good speed......he's not a homerun hit like Jeffers was in '00. He's a possession receiver.

Hey, I believe every team should have a possession receiver, but as a 3rd WR. Its better to have two burners as 1 and 2.

It was so cool watching Muhammad get double teamed, and watching Jeffers streak down the field 25-35 yards for a reception.

Then they'd get smart and double Jeffers, and Muhammad would have a big game.

Then they'd get really smart, and play both of them hard, and Walls would score touchdowns.

But hey, all the best to him, and the Patriots. Here's hoping we play them in the Superbowl soooooon.
