...that baseball's best closer is a former starter that had to hire a psychiatrist to help him get past his problem of finishing out games??

 This is one you can't even argue... right now... no matter HOW much you hate the Braves... Smoltz IS the game's best closer

Ummmmm. I'll have an order of "you certainly can argue that gagne is better" please. And they were both starters (but I don't know if gagne ever started in the majors).

    Stats

Pitcher YEAR G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO W L Hld Sv BS BAA WHIP ERA

    Smoltz 2003 32 0 34.1 26 3 3 0 5 44 0 0 0 24 1 .206 0.90 0.79

    Gagne 2003 30 0 31.0 13 7 7 1 6 56 1 1 0 21 0 .125 0.61 2.03

Gagne may get the job done but he is going to give his manager heart failure before years end. 2.09 whip is teetering on a disasterous inning. He will get eventually get bitten in the ass.

His ERA is 2.03 (I assume that is what you were talking about). His WHIP is 0.61 (vs. Smoltz's 0.90).

What does WHIP stand for? Walks+Hits per Innings Pitched?
