    The Catholic heirarchy is that -- a heirarchy, and it needs a head to continue to function. But doctrinal issues aside for a moment, he represents something to grass roots Catholics that Protestants don't understand. Protestantism is a fractured mess of debate and discrimination. Catholicism is what its definition suggests -- one holy church, and the pope is a living illustration of its unity. There is hope and comfort to be found in that symbolism.
