Direct TV

Hell yeah - HD DirectTiVos are coming back! DirecTV is back in business with TiVo, so DirecTV will again have the best DVR on the market! I refused to let them take my current HD DirecTiVo after seeing the other option they offer, even though it limited how many HD channels I get.

 

i've never had phone lines plugged in. It's only purpose is to be able to order PPV with your remote control. You can also log into your account online and place the order at no charge.

 

The new DVR, which is expected to be available mid to late 2009, will support both companies' features and services.

by the way, directv just gave us free showtime movie channels (there's about 12 of them, i think) for a year -- just for being with them for at least five years.

For a year or three months? We've been with them since '99, thats what the letter said anyway. We originally had Primestar for a couple of years before they were bought out by dtv, but I don't remember if it was in '99 or not. I do remember having Primestar in the late 90s.

 

i been with them since 2000 and me and parents had primestar also. my letter said 3 months of showtime. although i will take it without any complaints. (it is free)

 

I'm on DTV and am thinking of jumping ship to TW because of "creative" statements. I was paying $29.69 for the "Choice" package, special intro offer, up until 4/27. Then the premium jumped to $55.38, OK, "fine." It stayed there for two months, then jumped to $62.69, wtf!. I called, they said that the reason for $55.38 was because of a (obscure) $10 credit, that I knew nothing about. So, I said that $69.69 is too much, he brought it down $5, for one year.
Anyhow, after the dust settled, I'm strapped with a $52.99(tax and satellite maintenance included) TV bill. That's way too much because I need maybe a dozen channels, but you have to buy an upper tier in order to get, e.g., A&E and USA.

It'd sure be neat if they'd let you select the channels you want within a tier/number group, sans the premium channels, of course, rather than paying for many channels that you never watch.

 

I have had DTV for about three years or so I guess. Never had a real problem with it. The signal might scramble if it really poured the rain hard in a serious storm but was otherwise fine.

Recently the signal was scrambling on some channels and not on others... And some channels would have no sound. This seemed to happen overnight.

Well, I'm no satellite TV technician or the like so I call them to get a little assistance. Since I'm apparently just some plain ole customer I didn't get the royal treatment so many of you TV nuts apparently get. I had to wait on hold forever and then when I would eventually make it to the technical service area, I'd get some big dummy who would give me a load of BS. First time - lady told me that they were "moving ESPN to another satellite" and it may be scrambled for a few days... She acted as if this were the only Engrish she spoke when I tried to explain further...

The next person tried to convince me that one of my coaxial cables MUST be bad. When I would explain that away with logic, she couldn't think of anything else to say but did offer to give me free HBO for three months (which I never did receive) But she kept trying to have me have a technician come out to the house and I'd have to pay like 80-something bucks for that (wtf...)

Third call was the charm and the girl told me that it sounded like I just needed to adjust my satellite dish - directed me to the satellite strength menu and I told her I think I could handle that and I did - no problems...

So - all that said... they kinda ticked me off with such piss poor service. I pay 55.00 a month - equaling out to almost 70 bucks a month for the "Total Choice Plus Monthly" plan (this includes three receivers of which I pay 4.99 a piece for 2 of 'em) and some NC Video services tax which is another 4.50 or so (again... wtf...)

And when I signed up - I didn't get anything free at all... nothing - I didnt know you could. I didn't get a free portable DVD player, no free DVR or anything like that - My Dad got all kinds of stuff free when he recently went with their service.

I'm thinking of droppin' 'em and looking at bundling all my crap through AT&T internet DSL, home phone, and satellite (DishNet) for like 88 bucks a month total... (much less than I pay for the three items separately now) it's a year long rate that would edge up 40 bucks after 12 months - but still less than I pay now for the three... and I have dial up now.... no brainer?

Anyone have DISHNet or know anyhting about it - does it suck or what?

 

DISH is fine, up until recently it was considered the superior HD satellite choice. They have excellent customer service (like DTV most of the time) and will definitely offer you something to switch. Alternately, you can call DTV and tell them you are going to switch, and see what they offer you to stay (you'll have to sign another contract.)


Until Fios comes to Charlotte, you only have those three options (along with TWC.)

Just remember you can only get NFL Sunday Ticket on DTV, not DISH (or TWC obviously.)
