So how many carb grams would you recommend to lose weight? Not in a hurry to do it as if you lose too fast it usually comes back. I am looking at this as a life change. Already picked up my physical activity (walking 2 miles a day at a good clip)

  3. what probably made you gain the fat is that as we get older we lose muscle mass. Muscle is what makes your metabolism humm. Sign up at a gym and get on a basic program for month to get your muscles used to working again, then you can start to put on mass.

Walking is good, the key to doing cardio is knowing what range your heart rate is in. You are probably just getting into the 50% of your max if you are not in good shape. At this rate, you burn fat but you don't burn a lot of calories...so you don't burn that much fat. What you want to do is interval train. You want to get your heart rate up to 85% max for 30 seconds to a minute...then drop you intensity back down until your heart rate is at about 65%..then shoot it back up to 85%. You only need 25 minutes for a good interval workout. This will burn significantly more calories...you won't burn percentagely as much fat as the 55% but you'll burn more...the real benefit is that this will speed up your metabolism for up to 48 hours...this is where you'll burn a lot of fat too.

You probably want to sign up at gym and do the interval stuff on something low-impact.

I posted that Body of Life is just a ploy to sell EAS products. It is. If you want to do it and save money, drink a glass of milk instead of the myoplex. Most supplements give you expensive urine. If you don't beleive me, pick up the latest edition of Muscle Media (it is the swimsuit issue) and read it. The entire magazine is just Bob Phillips preaching his products and his routines.

oh yeah, the carb thing..considering you are working out, you don't want to drop into the glycogen too heavily. Atkins is really for people who don't work out. About 80 grams if you work out for the first two weeks, 20 grams for the first two weeks if you don't.

How do you get your heart rate up and know that it ios where you want it? I imagine a portable heart rate monitor? How would you know that you are at 85%, everyone is different. I mean I don't want to pull a Darryl Kile.

When I was at my heaviest, I tried that freaking diet too...And I gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks. As soon as I stopped abiding by the rules, I lost weight. I'm pretty sure I didn't cheat either. My body just stores fat instead of burning it. I can lose weight by cutting out a few things and exercising instead of trying another fad diet. I guess I need to do it again cause my pants are getting tight. :(

  8. You can buy one of those if you want, it will come with a chart...the max heart rate is based on your age...there is a standard chart.

Good machines have heart rate monitors built in. One of my favorites is like a glider but it has arm handles too so you get a whole body workout. Where you grip the handles has a heart rate monitor. Most good gyms have them on their equipment.

You can take your own pulse. Do you know how to do that?

You can also judge it...if you are really out of breath, your heart rate is up there around 85%, if you can carry on a conversation, it is probably less than 65%.
