Dieting Suck!

  1. if you don't know what you are doing, it is real easy to cheat and not know it. I'd strongly recommend you read the Atkins or Protein Power books. If I hadn't read the book, I would have done it wrong. It'll explain the insulin effect and bunch of other stuff you don't know...Contrary to popular beleif, you can actualy eat more vegatables and fruits than a vegatarian on the diet, you just have to chose the right ones.

It seems to me that if you don't lose 5 or more pounds in the first week, then you are doing it wrong. See, some carbs are stored in the muscle as soemthing called glycogen. Each gram of glycogen keeps 4 grams of water with it. After a week of low carbs, you should have cut into the supply of glycogen pretty heavily and lost at least 5 pounds of water. Even though it is water, you'll still fell a lot thinner...plus it has the effect of motivating you to keep up with it.

    Dear Mr. Sly-

Read this carefully - he went by the diet - exactly the way it said in the book. No - he didn't sneak Twinkies at work - he didn't eat bread - no extra dressing, etc.

I was just making the point that my husband was on the diet and followed it just like the book said and gained weight. He is now on a different diet and has lost 20 lbs.

Maybe some people's bodies don't respond to that diet.

Maybe his body was just responding to all the Goo Goo Clusters he was sneaking behind your back.

  4. Women can get just as good as results as men by adding a little bit of muscle. Normal body fat for a thin woman is 18%, a thin man is 10%. A man putting on 5 pounds of muscle would be the equivalent of a woman putting on 1. Women can put on muscle on and still look attractive, especailly in their legs and shoulders. You don't have testosterone (at least I hope not) so you don't have to worry about turning into a she-man.

The "tone" you are talking about is greatly enhanced by lifting weights in addition to doing cardio.

It could have been the custom Krispy Kreme doughnuts he was always ordering that were filled with mayonaise instead of vanilla cream.

  7. actually, you can have all of the mayonaise you want on the diet...it has no carbs...the donut on the other hand is a no no.:D

Yes, carbs will burn before fat, but any low-carb diet is dangerous and it don't work folks! The Atkins' Diet gets immediate results but it is not worth it. You WILL gain it back plus more when you go off of it and nobody has the will power to follow this high-fat, low carb diet forever. Low carb, high fat diets screw up the metabolism and can throw you into kidney failure. Ask any dietician about the low carb/high fat diets like Atkins and watch them go barn-yard crazy on you! The only thing that works long-term is changing eating habits and increasing activity to speed up metabolism.

Fred beat me to the punch

These low carb diets (adkins etc) tell you to eat proteins (steak, cheese etc..) but arn't you trading problems here? All that fat can't be doing your heart any good. I love chicken so that works for me. I used to have high cholestrol but have been taking Lipator for 5+ years and has knocked it down from the 280 range to my current 180 range. I went 6 months eating well (can count on one hand the no no's I ate including 1 pad of butter) and my choloestrol went down a whopping 5 pts! Genetics have screwed me there so medication was my only answer. I like the Body for life diet plan. It seems like a nice combination to the no carbs, verses no fat diets. Although having to drink those shakes seems silly. Someone posted a while back slamming the Body for life diet as nothing more than a promotional gimmic for EAS. Who knows

  10. I beg to differ here. It is much more unhealthy to be overweight. The diet breaks people's dependance on insulin spiking things like caffeine and coffee. People don't realize that you can become addicted to the insuling spike. As I've said, I've been on it in one form or another for three years and I passed my recent physical with flying colors. To prevent the kidney damage, you have to drink a lot of water, I mean a lot...which you are supposed to do on the diet anyways.

It is not a high fat, low carb...it is just a low carb...if you choose foods that are high in fats, that is your choice, you don't have to.

It is changing eating habits because it is getting away from foods that trigger insulin spikes which will store more fat. The USDA and most dieticians say you need 300 grams of carbs per day. They do not differentiate between people who sit in cubes all day and those who work construction. Are you telling me they both need 300 per day?

Charlotte Medical Group (a large group of physicians here in Charlotte) is for the Atkins diet if it works for the patient....including the dieticians. I know, I asked.

Once you have lost the weight, you go into the maintenance phase which is different for everybody. Most can eat 150 grams/carbs per day to maintain.
