Went to lunch - hit the Pizza Buffet (Yum)

Anyway, overheard 3 people order Diet Coke. They then proceed to order The Pizza Buffet with Salad. 2 return to seat with Salad, covered with Ranch Dressing. 1st plate stacked high with Pizza...

But hey, they ordered Diet Coke so they should be ok from a calorie count - ?

What makes you order Diet drinks? Personally I never have after tasting them many years ago... If I accidentally get one, I quickly spit it out...

  2. regular soda is sugar filled...something like 40 grams per 8 ounces..that's a ton of sugar..the bad kind that spikes insulin.

what's the big deal anyways? if you currently drink regular and switch to diet...do the math yourself, how many calories will you not take in over the course of a year...and how many pounds is that?

I dunno, I've seen many articles that basically say the ingredients in Diet Sodas are no better for you...

"In the intestinal tract, aspartame converts to two highly excitatory neurotransmitter amino acids: aspartate and phenylalanine, as well as methyl alcohol/formaldehyde-wood alcohol. It is claimed the liver renders methyl alcohol non-toxic. I personally think this is a false claim made to brush aside voiced objections for commercialization of a manufactured "food" that has a known toxic byproduct."

Diet Sodas Can Cause Weight Gain!

  4. sounds like BS to me.

some people prefer light beer, some the regular. some people prefer regular soda, some prefer diet.

would you question be different if they had orderd light beers instead?

A lot of studies have shown that people that switch to diet drinks are no better off because they consume more calories in other ways to compensate for it. Your body wants a set number of calories to be satisfied and you will eat more to get there.

I hate diet drinks and prefer sugar to artificial chemicals.

Good Question... Actually if you are going to order 2 drinks, say 2 light beers versus 2 Diet Drinks, I doubt you would find any doctor or medical proof to say that you would be better off with the 2 Diet Sodas. The 2 light beers would be better for you and you may even have a smile at the end of your meal. ;)

An excerpt from said article above supports your claim.
"Another problem with artificial sweeteners is a reflex that occurs when the brain reacts to sweet taste. The jargon used is "cephalic phase response". When sweet taste stimulates the tongue, the brain programs the liver to prepare for acceptance of new energy--sugar--from outside. If it is indeed sugar that stimulates the response, the effect on the liver will be the proper regulation of that sugar which has entered the body. However, if sweet taste is not followed by real nutrient availability, an urge to eat will be the outcome. It is the liver that produces the signals and the urge to eat. The more sweet taste that stimulates the taste buds without the accompanying calories, the more there is an urge to eat--overeat. "
