    Interesting comment form Clayton:

    8. Reaching for defensive ends. Last year, teams reached on drafting defensive tackles rating in the lower part of the first round and succeeded. This year, the position is going to be defensive end. Teams will reach. Will they succeed? Grant of Georgia, Dwight Freeney of Syracuse, Bryan Thomas of University of Alabama-Birmingham and Ryan Denney of Brigham Young probably are considered second-rounder. Two or three will go in the first round because it's a weak year at the position. Teams need pass-rushers. Need forces teams to make dramatic moves.

That makes me want Peppers with #2, corner with #34.

I'd been wavering, thinking Jammer with #2, and maybe 2 DE's with 34 and one other, but I think the depth at CB will be greater.

And then there were 8 nickelbacks........

Conventional wisdom tends to suggest that when you're looking at one pick, you have to look at the value of the pick itself and the want for the player himself over the value in successive rounds. No matter who we go with in 1, 2 will still leave a DL and a DB need. Part of that recommends that an expectation that the right corner will be there at 34 could come back to haunt us.
So we end up having to approach things as jsut one player against one player, regardless of the rest.
The DE run will be a big one. DTs might go high because of this also, but I don't think so. Weaver, Triplett, Freeman really aren't first round type picks if four corners and at least three ends go.

The good thing about the DE run is that we can't really use any of those guys. Edwards won't be there, for certain, and the rest are right end prospects. Denney isn't the end-all guy.

Either way we need two blue chips on D. The rest can be blue collar. The problem is, if we take a true left end in the 2nd, will he be explosive enough? especially with the guys coming out next year. If we take a right end, will it be a waste with Rucker here?

The same argument could be made for drafting a CB with #34.

I just don't see the run on CB's the way DE's could be. It seems like we could get a 'better' CB than DE with #34, and if not, maybe an RB or DT.

I'm now happy with Jammer or Peppers. It's #34 that's gonna be the trick.

Yeah but problem is that you don't get to 34 after 2. We gotta come in with a definite thought process but to a large degree you can't base #2 on #34. I'd rather nail 2 than 34, I can live with being wrong about the 34 pick if I have to.

2 seems a given - Peppers or Jammer. I think that's pretty well nailed *the more I think about it, the more I like Jammer here as the safe pick*.

    We'll know soon.

Safe pick, or the right one? :D

In other words, do we take Harrington because he's the next best QB, or do we take him because he's the best available player?
I'm not convinced he's that high on our draft board.

Jammer's agent Shawn Roberts thinks the Panthers are going to take Quentin Jammer with the 2nd pick. He also says the Panthers have "no one" at the CB position.
