I'd be okay with it but why would Jake want to be here, just to play a few games or less? if I were him I'd rather enjoy my millions and my racehorses.

I bet he would love to come back and have a shot at redemption.

Well there's a small shot he could come in and start out 3-1 or something, and keep winning so they sit Cam but that's a total fantasy scenario. Reality is, he still sucks and will be a mentor/short term placeholder. Very short term.

OTOH, where else could he get another paycheck, so maybe he'd go for it.

    He's had some health issues.

I think I'd prefer Collins as backup at this point, but wouldn't hate seeing #17 back. As a backup.

Let Jake come back and fight off the wolves until Newton is ready to go. Might as well not damage Newton with a confidence killing beat down right out of the box.

At this point, any QB we bring in is going to be at a disadvantage save Philip Rivers or anyone else who's been with SD in the last couple of years. All new offense...remember?

If they start Newton right away he is going to be running the ball and scrambling all the time. He will not grasp the offense right away and will not be able to get the ball to his WRs consistently. Why let him go out there and do that when there is a good chance he gets hurt. He blows up his knee this year and he may never get all his mobility back, like Culpepper.... Mobility is always going to be a big part of his game.

at the least, money's a lot better on the sidelines than at home, and I don't think competitors ever really want to pack it in.

given the choice of Delhomme or Collins, I know the staff and players would respond to Delhomme a good bit more.

It's certainly not a necessity but I like the idea.
