Pete was a stop gap measure for us at best. There was no reason to stick with him when Jake clearly beat him out for the job in preseason. I guess that was one of those times when a coach does something out of loyalty and for morale of the team rather than basing it on the best player.

Nothing against Pete, he played as well as you could expect from a guy at the tail end of a long career. I think he did a good job from the bench too when he was a backup.

I just think that situation is a good example of Fox be reluctant to change stuff. Foster outplayed Davis in 2005 but did not get to start until Davis just sputtered out. Right now Marshall is probably one of our two best corners but he does not start. DW was better than Foster the past two years and he did not start. Stewart looks better than DW but he has not started so far.

If I remember correctly, he didn't clearly beat him out.

it was just shy of clearly, but yeah, he was better.

At the time I thought the plan was probably to give Jake the bye week to be ready, that was week 3 that year. Peete's play accelerated the transition.

Jake's game 4 of preseason was a perfect QB rating, and he had 121 on 11/11 for 2 TD. He was clearly much better than Peete.
The only thing not as clear up until that game was whether he or Weinke had been better.

I remember it being questionable that Peete was the starter but not outrageous.

Weinkie had a good preseason that year too. I remember thinking he might have finally turned a corner and would play well. I think Weinkie and Delhomme both beat out Peete that year. It just seemed strange to me at the time that we had a grizzled veteran who had very little left starting ahead of the young free agent QB we had signed.

Because Peete was a solid quarterback who kept us close during most of '02. Most people including myself wanted Delhomme, but most of the educated fans also recognized that Peete had done a decent job the previous season.
