I'm happy for him, it was a matter of time.

So - who's our new DC?

You think they'll even bring in a DC? Maybe Fox will just do it himself.

The most involved HC in defense is Herm Edwards. And he has a coordinator.

Everyone has coordinators. A lot of head coaches with offensive philosophies call their own plays but generally still have OCs who game plan and run the offense.

Good for him, I was hoping this would happen next year but it's good to see him make it.

    It's official now -

    Del Rio named Jags coach
    Jan. 16, 2003
    SportsLine.com wire reports

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as coach on Thursday, a source told the Associated Press.

The 39-year-old former NFL linebacker will be introduced at a news conference Friday, according to the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. Contract details haven't been fully worked out, but there is nothing in the negotiations that would hold up Del Rio's hiring, the source said.

In Del Rio's single season as coordinator for the Panthers, he helped them improve from 31st in the league to second in defense.

His signature moment came on opening day, when he ran onto the field and got in the middle of a celebratory pileup with the players during their 10-7 victory over Baltimore.

It's that kind of fire owner Wayne Weaver was seeking when he released Tom Coughlin and went searching for a new coach, someone who could reconnect with the community and help boost ticket sales, which dropped dramatically the last two years.

Jaguars to name Del Rio head coach Friday
    PAT YASINSKAS
    Staff Writer

Next season's Carolina Panthers will be without the coordinator who brought their defense from worst in the league to nearly the best.

Jack Del Rio is expected to be officially named head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday. The Jaguars and Del Rio's agent, Gary O'Hagan were putting the finishing touches on a contract Thursday afternoon. The deal is expected to pay Del Rio about $1.2 million a season.

Del Rio, 39, has been a coordinator for just one year. But elevating Carolina's defense from 31st in the league in 2001 to second in 2002 made him a rising star. Del Rio had an impressive interview with Jacksonville owner Wayne Weaver at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday and quickly became the frontrunner.

Del Rio, a former linebacker who spent 11 years in the NFL, came to the Panthers a year ago after three seasons as linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens.

It's unclear how the Panthers will fill Del Rio's role, but coach John Fox said earlier this week he had several possibilities to explore if the position came open. The Panthers may look outside for a coordinator, but it's likely Fox would at least consider some of his current assistants, including defensive line coach Mike Trgovac, linebackers coach Sam Mills and defensive backs coach Rod Perry.
