We were talking about this on the Niners board:

When Sean May goes pro, will that officially be the end of the college low post game?

Someone asked me during the game last night to name another true post player in College and the best I could do was Andrew Bogut, who is A) A guy who likes to face the basket and shoot, and B) going pro anyway.

There are no other post players in college basketball. The best of the rest are undersized combo forwards who lack post moves and get their points from cleaning up the boards or hitting jumpers from the top of the key or mid range. Roger Powell, Duke's Williams, & Curtis Withers are all good examples of this.

Shelden Williams can hit the 8 foot jumper but he doesn't alot. He is definately a true low post back to the basket forward.

there's a chance he goes too. I'm really hoping the age limit comes soon. No just for Carolina, but for basketball in general. The college game would improve talent wise, and the pro game would improve due to having players more polished before they play. NBA coaches don't have time to teach, and college coaches aren't getting the top players. And the players are actually even hurting themselves. They get in a 5 year career and its done for some of them, because they never learn to use their talent to its top potential. If they'd play college ball first their careers would be extended tenfold.

He may be the closest thing to the real deal left in college Sly. I am honestly struggling to remember how often Duke runs plays for him compared to how many garbage baskets he gets.

The question that decided it for me was if he would play low post in the pros. I'm thinking he is too small, but I could be wrong.

Eric Williams at Wake is another, but he is definitely too short and isnt the dominating low post option that he could be. He still gets half his somewhat modest production or more from putbacks.

I digress though. there are very few post players left, and as another Niner fan said, they are probably slow footed big men playing at smaller schools that we don't hear about.

How would it? You still need the true 6'10 guy in middle to chuck the ball to for an easy turnaround layup.

If they move the 3 point line out, I think it could open the door for more motion offense and guards posting up - if defenses get stretched accordingly. Right now, everyone just packs it in if you have anything resembling a low post game or your guards cant shoot from outside.

Why bother dumping it down to a decent post player - if you even have one - when you can keep chucking?

You aren't going to have many at all, until/if the age limit goes into place. The true post players are going straight to the NBA. The ones that could play post and are in college, like to go out to the easy 3pt shot, so moving that out would help with the 6'9" or 6'10" guys bringing their game in some.

The game is just not what it once was, and not sure it ever will be unless some major changes are made.
