Maybe Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel didn't get that memo.

Or maybe they promoted him for an entirely different reason. The fact is that we don't have any sources saying that Magini asked for permission to interview Davidson, which he could do even under the old system even if Davidson had been AHC. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't assume it happened when we have no evidence to support it, anymore than we should believe the rumors that McCoy was a hot OC prospect.

RC is a seriously insecure individual. Firing his son, getting Davidson to do dirty work he should do himself and then possibly canning Davidson after that work was done. To keep a job.

it does, however, state that Mangini was interested in him and that he was promoted as that reason. The thing I don't get, however, is why he wasn't signed to a new contract at that point. It states that's why, whether they needed to do so or not.

Sure. There's no concrete statement from either that Mangini was turned down. It's the "smoke=fire" thing, but it was certainly reported enough places and times to not simply dismiss it. There's no reason for you to simply believe "it's not true", anymore than to believe it is. You choose to believe the entire media got it wrong, just as you choose to believe the story hasbeens quoted about the personnel clash with Savage was wrong.

And yes, these rumors and notations are more credible than the McCoy ones. No, teams don't usually say "hey, we're interviewing this person, and this person." It's a news based almost exclusively on rumor, and when every bit of every rumor comes from one reporter with the source always going back to the agent, that news isn't that credible. Whether other teams did ask about McCoy, I don't know, and I never said didn't happen.

No, that could very easily be why Davidson wasn't chosen to be Cleveland's OC. I never said hasbeen's story was wrong, you just speculate that I think something because you don't want to admit that you jumped the gun. You said that Mangini wanted him, but we have no actual evidence to support that. And you said that Arizona wanted him, but he was never interviewed by Whisenhunt (although sources speculated that an interview could have been forthcoming).

We have one story saying that Mangini was interested and that the Browns promoted him because of that. As you note, his contract was not extended at that time. Moreover, Mangini still could have asked to interview Davidson and apparently did not. Hell, it seems incredibly unlikely that Davidson would have been ahead of Heimerdinger on any OC list anyway.

FWIW, former Patriots QB Jim Miller heavily endorsed Davidson during his "The Afternoon Blitz" radio show on Sirius. He said JD was a great hire for Carolina, that his offensive philosophy was a good fit for the Panthers and especially for John Fox.

Again, I just want to make it clear that I have no reason to think that Davidson is a poor choice, nor do I necessarily think so. I'm just bothered by the fact that New England turned him down and then Cleveland turned him down twice. I hope he's an excellent hire and an innovative mind, but I'm uncomfortable with hoping a guy will be good since we're supposed to be a contender. You shouldn't have to depend upon an unknown as an OC if you're supposed to be at that level.

or you communicated that wrong. It seemed as if you were saying he was simply being passed over as OC, that he wasn't good enough. If that's not what you said, that's not what you said, but sure, that's how it was taken.

Other than all the reports saying Mangini wanted him. What happened there, we don't know, but it was reported they wanted him.

Never said he'd interviewed. Certainly there was stated interest, and I see no reason to directly state that's untrue.
Teams always want to extend coaches. He didn't sign an extension, presumably for this reason, to be able to move around. Not coincidentally, it's also the only reason Weis would've been able to come to Carolina in 2002 - he and other coaches hadn't signed extensions in 2001 because they felt Parcells was coming back. With the new rules, it's the only way to get promoted unless you have a generous coach like Billick or Lewis that will let you interview when they aren't required to do so. That's how Tomlin was able to get the job with Minnesota, as well.

I never said anything that even resembled disagreement with hasbeen's story, you just pulled that out of your ass because you're getting defensive. The fact is that Davidson wanted the Cleveland OC job, he interviewed with Savage for it, and he was not selected. It's entirely possible that the reason he wasn't selected was because of his personnel preferences, but he wanted the job and he didn't get it.
It's one report saying that Mangini wanted him and all others just repeating that under the assumption that there was some validity to it. The fact is that we have no evidence that Mangini ever asked the Browns to interview Davidson, which he certainly could have. Moreover, I suspect that you know I'm right about the preposterousness of thinking that Davidson would ever be in competition with Heimerdinger for an OC position.
No, there was never any stated interest. Mangini never said that he wanted Davidson (I suppose he couldn't or it would be tampering), that was just reported as a rumor. As I pointed out to you, that's no different than the McCoy rumors which you choose to disbelieve.

I'm not getting defensive, I'm just relaying the way you're stating. If you're fine with Davidson, or don't begrudge the hire, that's great, but up to then all you were saying was "he was turned down, these rumors aren't true", and people are going to make assumptions based on that. I have no problem with those assumptions. You stated he'd been turned down, and didn't put any positivity into HB's story, just sticking with evaluating him based on "he wasn't hired."

do you have any credibility that all these outlets simply repeated that?
