We could get worse but not much considering we were 27th is scoring and 22 in yards.

I read several times that Crennel was going to have to make staff changes to keep his job. Davidson may have been caught up in that, and not been evaluated by football people.

The guy they did hire had previously worked on Crennels staff. He was associated with a successful, high flying O in SD. Maybe they thought he was a safer choice. One that Collin would have liked. SD's O > Cleveland's O.

There were lots of reports at the end of the season that Crennel was on thin ice, and management required changes in his coaching staff in order for him to stay. In fact, several coaches were either let go, or not signed to new contracts...which somewhat verifies these reports. Most of the coaches let go were on the offensive side, which explains the reason Davidson was not hired as OC. It is obvious that management saw the offense as the main problem, and rather than identify the pieces that could be a part of the rebuilding, they decided to blow it up and start all over.

While Davidson was the OC for the last ten games, he did not have any input into the offensive coaching team Crennel put together and is not the one who installed the offense they ran...it is virtually impossible to completely change an offensive philosophy in mid-season, especially when you have to rely on Charley Fry as your starting QB. In other words, he could only work with what was already there. I think Davidson just got caught in a bad situation that he had little control over. The Browns admitted they didn't have the pieces in place, and that injuries (especially to Bentley) really hurt their offense. But just like many claim here, they felt they needed a scapegoat, and the entire offense was it.

As for NE, I have no idea why he was passed over, perhaps it was something as simple as Belicheck wanting someone loyal to him, and not Weis, or perhaps Davidson had some ideas that Belicheck didn't like. We really don’t know, but the fact everything else there shows he was respected as a legitimate OC candidate makes me feel that it was not his qualifications that kept him out, but that he was not a good fit, for whatever reason.

Zampese was the sexy pick, but after reading up on Davidson, he is clearly the most experienced and qualified of the options.

I know. And I'm seriously hoping Davidson being here will be an incentive for Graham to sign with us.

Just my opinion, but I think there's a difference between "not being good enough" and "not being the best available candidate". Maybe Belichick liked Davidson, but liked his QB coach more. Crennel went with Carthon, who already had an established name over Davidson, but Davidson ended up getting the job anyway. Of course there's a question as to why they didn't immediately give him the title of OC and a new contract at the end of the season, but to counter that, Mangini thought he was good enough for his staff. That says something to me. Again, that's just my opinion.

agree, and good post. A good number of the guys there went. RC fired his own kid, I think. Certainly fired Robiskie, a former coordinator, a former interim coach twice, a guy whose prodigy, Edwards, certainly has developed. Not many guys stayed on O.

I don't think they scapegoated him. They wanted him there. Just not as the OC, which was a hire RC needed to make so he could stay a coach. I'm sure if they could've kept him, they would have.

McDaniel's getting a lot of pub as a hell of a young coach, and so I'm sure that had something to do with it - I'm sure not a tiny piece of ego was involved either...you develop McDaniel and he goes on to greatness, he's yours. Davidson develops, he's Weis' boy. I can't say there's validity to that, though. Maybe Bellichick and Brady just liked McDaniel.

Yeah. Whisenhunt liked him. Mangini liked him. Crennel liked him. His young, promising contemporaries felt he was a good coach. That's not a bad thing.

I would've picked Zampese. I don't begrudge Davidson for that, and honestly had I taken more time to look for the Weis thing, I'd have supported him more.

Something very interesting about Davidson from Cleveland.com...
