yeah, but my point is that there's probably someone out there who's got those shows and has been circulating them all this time.
So you don't have to worry about transferring them - the DATs shouldn't go bad from personal consumption, and you're probably not looking to trade them anyway. So just listen to them and have fun with it.

I think there's a good Dead newsgroup that trades in SHN. It'd be easy for you to get more, if you're after that, or get different recordings of the same shows.

No, there aren't. I was pretty anti-social and didn't make many copies other than cassette. There are about a dozen shows that fit this category, where to my knowledge these are the best audience recordings made of these show, and I'm the only one with them.

Ehh. I'm still lazy. One day i'll get it done, hopefully before the tape becomes plagued with dropouts.

You do not understand what I'm saying, so I'll say it more clearly:

I made AUDIENCE tapes. I taped audience FOB. (FOB means front of board, in front of the soundboard where it sounds good, as opposed to tapers section ) I used extremely high end equipment. I knew everyone that was taping FOB at any given show with quality equipment. There were several shows where I was the only one. I never made clones of these tapes, therefore these tapes are NOT in circulation. YES, there are plenty of other recordings of these performances, either soundboard, tapers section audience, or FM. But no FOB tape.

Most every recording I have is either the reference FOB tape, or the best quality otherwise. I have no recordings made from the taper's section, as they are all garbage.

See? You made me go and get geeky.

I've had success getting this stuff out in the past, but often it was by cajoling old guys I knew into making me tapes from old pre taper's section cassette masters that they made. I just realized this old website is still up:

    http://home.carolina.rr.com/fobtree/

I forgot how many we got out, check the structure.

There's probably 50 sources of these shows, but what went out on that tree was the best example of those recordings, period.

    Off the top of my head, I have 6/18/91, 6/19/91, 6/24/91, 6/25/91, 8/12/91, 12/27/90 set 2 that I've never circulated.

On average, my opinion is that soundboard's best thing out there. Next best is anything mic'd away from the crowd, or more importantly, one or two annoying motherfuckers.
Some tapers with mics do well, but I just can't like anything as much as a soundboard.

Being as how I can run sound.

Yeah. But soundboard live to 2 track typically loses any 'soul'. Very tough.
On the other hand, aud is extremely tough.

I take aud over board any day. I made some good 16 track mixed live to 2 track of Phish back in '90 and '91, and those are good. But I'm sure that modern FOB aud would be better, considering what they now put into their PA sound.

I've got some aud tapes that will blow your mind. Most bands don't have a PA worth a shit to carry it. The dead absolutely did. Pretty much every FOB aud is better than all sbd tapes, unless the arena really sucked (see Deer Creek, Shoreline).

    Then distribute that shit, fucker.
I could say you owe me anyway :D

till then, I stick to my feelings on SBD. I guess it depends on the band, but DMB soundboard kicks the fucking ass. Jimi from soundboard kicks that much more of the ass. The Zep I have just doesn't sound good because it's all overdistorted and has too much crowd noise. Maybe that's where my beef is - I'm fucking tired of throwing away shows because there's some chick fucking playing tambourine in the crowd next to the taper.
