Sorry, I should have specified that since 2000 about two thirds have been losses. Back before that, 400 yard games were mostly wins. I have no idea why that changed so drastically.

 

That is incorrect. Teams that throw for 400 or more yards since 2000 are 34-36-1.

You are correct however, that the win percentage was higher before 2000. From 1989 to 1999, teams that threw for at least 400 yards were 29-15.

Interesting. I use sportsdatabase.com to get all these types of stats. I get very similar but not exact numbers as that article, but the general premise still holds true.

In my opinion, the reason for this, is that the teams that threw for more than 400 averaged more than double the turnovers of their opponents (2.6 to 1.2). In this period, teams that throw for more than 400 are 10-2 if they win or tie the turnover battle. In fact they are 12-8 as long as they don't lose the turnover battle by more than 1.

 

Another contributing factor would be prevent defenses. Teams play soft when ahead to avoid giving up the big play. This allows QBs to dink and dunk down the field and accumulate yards.
