This is very good imho. We really need someone to take the pressure off of Smitty. Who are they gonna double now.

As far as the cap situation, if the Redskins can be away with what they do year in and year out then we should have no problems. I have a bigger problem with paying Foster and Morgan what we did than I do signing Kemoeatu, Hartwig and Meshawn.

If we stay healthy this year we should be very good.

Smitty. This wont mean he wont see the bulk of the coverage....this just means that someone else can make a goddamn first down when 89's being draped by three guys.

Carter as #3 receiver may have a good year also. He may be forgot about by defenses focusing on smith and keyshawn and should be able to really use his speed.

using Colbert as a 3rd down option and Carter as a situational alternative will look a lot less awkward than Colbert not catching a ball all game and "here comes the skinny fast guy to replace him"

Carter may have the chance to make more big plays now too. If we go three wide with Smith and Key then Carter should draw the third best corner or a safety. This should help the running game too. I doubt many teams will put eight in the box against us now.

I expect some fiscal sanity. Yes, we all realize that Keyshawn Johnson adds something substantial to our offense (although I think some people are going overboard in their giddiness), but $4 million a year is a ton of money for a #2 wideout, especially one nearing the end of his career and having potential character issues. Like I said, if we win the Super Bowl then everyone will say it was worth it, but consistently overspending threatens your ability to compete in future seasons.

In '96 we got so close to winning a championship that we could taste it. What was our response? We went out and signed every guy who was available for more money than they were worth. In retrospect those moves weren't smart, but at the time people loved them and thought those players would be worth the extra dollars. What did it result in?

    7-9
    4-12
    8-8
    7-9
    1-15

Now I don't think things will get that bad, but I am worried about how the excesses of the present will affect our future ability to compete. The Hartwig deal was a great one and the Lewis deal was pretty good too, but while the other ones targetted all the right players, we've consistently paid too much. If that pays off, kudos to Hurney, but it's a pretty big risk to take.

Smith on MSP said all the right things but didn't sound enthusiastic about it. Did he say he also did not talk to the team about it until it was basically done? I'm not trying to make it into a big deal, but it goes against the idea that he was involved and called him and gave his blessing. My only real observation was how reserved he sounded about it.
