    wifey's machine.

Mcafee apparently expired awhile ago. Here's what happened today:

uninstalled mcafee. before rebooting to complete uninstall, installed avg. Ran avg scan, all good.

Reboot - froze on reboot. pulled battery. hung. pulled again to safe. uninstalled avg. can run in safe. still can not run anything in normal, but will boot. cant open windows or start button even, locks. pulled battery. went to safe mode - system restore - get blue screened on system restore. did this thrice.

    thoughts:

mcafee unloaded it's 'vault' on uninstall?

I reinstalled avg ( it ran fine before mcafee uninstalled ) cant seem to do a thorough scan in safe mode. installed malwarebytes which is scanning now.

i'm on the machine in safe mode right now...typing this.

i hate the big-name "security suite" type apps out there. i've had nothing but problems using and then trying to disable/uninstall things like norton, so tend to avoid them.

since the two apps are handling some low level access stuff, i'm thinking they both tinker with some deep system settings/files.

the install process likely takes a snapshot of the current settings, then when you uninstall it restores them on the next reboot (since it likely can't change them on the fly).

when you installed avg, i'm thinking it took a snapshot of the partially delete mcafee settings, then installed/flagged to install its own settings. on reboot, mcafee finished uninstalling which replaced the avg settings with the ones from when mcafee was installed. uninstalling avg, then re-installed the tidbit of mcafee that was still around when avg was installed...

not sure how you go about figuring out what was corrupted and how you'd fix it. perhaps simply re-installing avg would get you back up and going...

    I reinstalled avg, still fucked.

I ran the malware scan - found nothing.

I may need to reinstall the OS?

    Uninstall AVG.

then get ccleaner (check google) Run that and use its tools to clean the registry.

    reboot

get Avast antivirus. Its free and way better than AVG

Once this is done let me know.

I have a computer at home doing some weird shit I need to work on. It’s a little netbook the kids use. I rarely pay attention to it but they have been having problems with massive amounts of pop ups lately. And of course being kids they have to click on everything that comes up. No anti-virus running on it. Last night I tried to load spybot-sd and it kept coming up with some error and wouldn’t install. Gave up there and tried to load AVG and it wouldn’t install either – kept saying it couldn’t find an internet connection even though it was on line. It was late so I quit.

Am wondering if there is some crud blocking me from installing these programs. Anybody have any ideas? I’ll probably try it again tonight.
