DW had 11 carries for 21 yards (1.9) in the Philadelphia win, 17 carries for 56 yards (3.3) in the Atlanta win, 22 carries for 93 yards (4.2) in the win against the Chargers, 10 carries for 19 yards (1.9) against Oakland, and 21 carries for 210 in the season finale against New Orleans. Take out that last Saints game and he averaged a pathetic 3.47 yards per carry during the rest of the season. I like the guy and would love to have him finish his career with the Panthers on a restructured contract, but he is a significantly diminished player at this point in his career.

 

The sad reality is that both need to go if Cam Newton remains the team's quarterback, which he should.

 

So when can we cut Stew without killing the cap?

I'm glad you asked this because there was some information I didn't realize. Stewart really needs to be cut before the 2014 season because of a $9 million option bonus that kicks in at that point. If you let that activate then it makes it unpalatable to cut him for another two seasons, much like Thomas Davis' did. Here's how it breaks down as far as I can tell:

2014 - $6.05 mil if kept, $7.4 mil if cut
2015 - $8.8 mil if kept, $11.85 mil if cut
2016 - $9.55 mil if kept, $7.3 mil if cut
2017 - $8.25 mil if kept, $2.75 mil if cut

So if you let the 2014 option bonus kick in then it really makes no sense to cut him until 2016. Marty Hurney is the gift that keeps on giving.

 

That's the really, really depressing thing about liking this team. Because Gettleman opted not to tear things down and clear the cap as quickly as possible, Hurney's cap mess will persist into 2016/2017.
