The Cubs announced today that Zambrano has agreed to a five year, 91.5 million dollar deal. A sixth year is optional at 19.25 million for that year. Did the cubs make a good deal here?

What is the total payroll from the Cubs? They definitely needed to keep him around and maybe go after another starter in the offseason. They really aren't that far off. Piniella has done a good job rallying the troops after that horrendous start.

the cubs payroll for 2007 is about 115 million. Also, included in Zambrano's new contract is a full no trade clause. Soriano's contract also has a full no trade clause through 2014. Derek Lee is a Cub through the 2010 season, also a no trade clause in his contract. Ramirez, a cub through 2011 with an option for '12. No trade clause there too. With these definites coming back, the cubs look very strong for years to come. I think that they need to re-sign Kerry Wood, Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot, and give Carlos Marmol a long-term deal.

This was a no brainer even for the Cubs. No way was Zambrano leaving unless a team like the Yankees drove the price through the roof. He probably has as much 'STUFF" as anyone. If he ever gets his emotions checked on a more consistant basis he will be one of the best. With all of this said, remember it's the freakin Cubs.

I might disagree with this one. As much as I love Kerry Wood, we may need to cut our loses here. However, if he remains in the bullpen the rest of the year, healthy and effective, then I could see why they would ponder hanging on to him, but only out of the bullpen.

zambrano took less money than he would have gotten in the free agent market. This guy really wants to be a cub, which is the kind of player that every team needs this day in age. He reportedly told Jim Hendry when they started talking about the deal that he wasn't going anywhere unless they wanted him to. True Cub, I love this guy.

The Cubs got a break with him signing and not testing the free agent waters. I'm sure that he prefers to stay in Chicago but if he says, "It's not about the money" you know he's FOS.
