Nope. There was never any such thing. There have been various "massive" floods in history, but massive in the sense of the current mess in Louisiana, not something on the order of thousands of square miles, much less the whole world.

Yes I did happen to know that, as the Bible is rather specific about exactly how big it was (re: "The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits"). But it's blindingly obvious that the ark story couldn't actually be true. There wouldn't be anything close to enough space for two of every species on earth, anything less than around 100-1,000 members of a population will consign a species to exinction anyway, there wouldn't be any way to actually gather animals from all over the earth, etc.

Seriously, the flood story is so preposterous if taken literally that it's hard to believe anyone ever saw it as more than allegory (and remember that the Ark story was taken wholesale from pre-existing Sumerian myths, re: Gilgamesh), but obviously many people not only did, but still do. The question isn't whether or not it happened, since it obviously could not have, but whether or not it was based in even the vaguest connection to an actual event (which is probably unanswerable).

If you don't believe in the Bible you will just shrug off what I'm going to say, Noah did not go out and gather the animals, the animals came to him (according to the Bible). Also you have to realize that Noah took every "kind", which means you wouldn't need every type of dog, horse, etc only those that are fertile within their group. I.e, a dog could breed with any other dog.

This site has a small diagram that shows there was more than enough room to house the species of the earth.

    Noah's ark

But we could argure back and forth, essentially if you don't believe in the Bible you aren't going to believe in Noah's ark.

No, seriously dude, even most Christians would try and help you understand that there absolutely could not have been an actual flood story. There is no geological evidence of a worldwide flood or anything close to it, two members of a population cannot sustain a species, animals couldn't come from all over the world to Noah, they wouldn't have time to come to Naoh, they wouldn't have brought food with them, and the calculations in your article are absolutely bizarre. It's counting every bit of cubic space as if one animal could live packed on top of another, on top of another, etc. You actually have just 33,750 (450x75) square feet of horizontal space, which isn't enough for two of all the species in whatever your county happens to be, much less the world.

Honestly, ask around to other Christians. The flood story is allegorical, not literal. It's not even the type of thing a miracle could satisfy unless God magically teleported all the animals from all over the world, magically shrunk them, magically provided all of them with food and water, and magically allowed each species to survive even though science has shown that you need at least several hundred and usually a thousand or more animals from a species to prevent it from going exinct.

Why are we having a science debate in the religion and spirituality forum?

I think Vito once said that if you put God into the equation, then anything is possible. After having seen and experienced many supernatural occurrances(sp), I believe he's right.

There are plenty of people who go to christian churches who are not
born-again. I also think that most born-again christians believe the Genesis account and the story of Noah. Those who don't, in my opinion, are lacking the depth and quality of relationship with God that He intended for us to have and experience.

So I guess it's impossible to stack animals on top of each other with possibly a platform? You have 45 ft to play with, might as well waste it I guess. Noah also took 120 years to build the ark, I guess that wouldn't have given any animals time to get to where he is at.

If you surf the web you can find plenty of geological evidence of a flood. Even Robert Ballad who found the Titantic has found what he believes to be evidence of a global flood or as you stated, close to it.

I'd like to know who these "Christians" are that don't believe in Noah or a global flood. I would say that those that I know and oh, probably 100% of those in my church believe in a global flood.

Hypothetically speaking, if there had been a global flood during Noah's time, specifically what geological evidence would you expect to find?

Yep, and it's impossible to feed 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, too. Or to sustain 2 million nomads for 40 years with bread falling out of the sky every day. Or to part a huge body of water long enough for over half a million people to walk across it.

A miracle, by its very definition supercedes the law of science. That's why it's a miracle.
