Firefly had a bigger following and Serenity received pretty good reviews, but it tanked at the box office anyway.

than the Watchmen? I don't think so...

It had a budget of $39mil...far below the $200mil for the Watchmen. The marketing campaign alone will eclipse the entire production budget for Serenity.

So even if Watchmen is as successful as 300 (which only cost 64 million to make) domestically it will barely break even. Yikes.

Much bigger, no question. Joss Whedon geeks had conventions and shit where thousands would dress up as characters for the show, and DVD sales were in the millions. The Watchmen graphic novel just isn't very well known. Even if the movie's marketing budget is bigger, Serenity got tons of press coverage and still tanked.

Wow! Tag teaming my ass. Hehe... If it gets a PG-13 rating, I still think it's possible to eclispe Iron Man. If it's an R, it should do as well as 300.

Oh, and I was wrong about the budget...it was $100-120m.

I hope it does well, I just don't believe that it will. In any case, I'm interested in it.

No, but if I were I'd be worried about losing money on Watchmen.

Saw the new trailer and unlike most, apparently, I'm really disappointed. The visuals are outstanding, but everything I see out of the characters further convinces me that they're going to miss badly on the tone and tenor of the film. Rorschach has some scratchy, angsty voice like he's Wolverine or something, which is totally wrong. His voice should be a cold, flat, dispassionate monotone. He's not a bitter, angry anti-hero, he's an insane pseudo-rationalist who acts like a robot with really fucked up programming. Similarly, Dr. Manhattan is too human. His voice should convey his aloof and otherworldly nature. This really comes across as an attempt to honor the graphic novel that fails badly because the people behind it just never grasped the atmosphere or point of the story.

I agree with the Rorschach voice. Other than that I think it is too early to tell.
