    hp, you will like this.....

today we had a customer appreciation pig-picking, and my best customer brought about 10 of his staff. As they were leaving, one of the staff comes up to me, and asks me about my 49er golf shirt. He said "you a 49er fan?" I said "just a little.":D I knew his name was Norris and he is about a 6-6 black guy, but I didnt' put it together beforehand that he was 49er legend Norris Dai (pronounced- day). He said "I played basketball there back in the 70's" and we hit it off big time. He told me he still owns the rebound record for one season at 14 per game. He was on the first Div 1 team in 74, I think. Of course one of my best friends is another 70's player Ben Bassinger, who has told me a bunch of Norris Day stories, and Ben is the current single game rebound record holder of 24 (tied with Cornbread). I told Norris that Ben was a great friend of mine, and he started telling old war stories. It was also cool because one of my coworkers told me my shirt was not appropriate for work, and I told him he is a jackass, and it was a converstation piece, and it turned out that my shirt made me a hero with this customer. When my coworker overheard our conversation about my shirt, I could see him inserting his foot in his mouth.

Norris Dae does still own the records, 417 rebounds in a season (14.8 rpg) over 28 games. I bet few college teams have an average of more than that. Dave Taylor had told me stories of him. Norris was a good player, led the team in scoring in the 1969-70 (15.8 ppg) and 1970-71 (13.9 ppg) seasons. I met him once or twice in college. He was at a reunion of the Dixie Conference championship team last season.

The one player I wish I'd seen play prior to my time was Robert Earl Blue. He was as skinny as they come but the stories of him scoring (19.9 ppg) are good. I wish DT would write about some of those early days for the archives.

BTW, was the BBQ quality eating?

all kidding aside, our pig-picking is world class. We have a guy smoke about 40 lbs of Boston butt, and you don't even have to chew it. One of our employees is a volunteer fireman, and he is the best around, I swear. I hover over him getting cooking tips all day.

Norris also was a walk on that did not play high school basketball! He walked on and led the team in rebounds and scoring after two years.......amazing.

With his size, 6-6 and bulky was good in those days, I can see how he did it. If you're smart and can block out, rebounds come easily.

I'm sooooo sorry VA. I can't even remember what NC bbq tastes like. I'm so sick of beef brisket and sausage.

Sounds to me like 2 49ers need to hit the highways for a road trip.
