In the way you're talking about, being 'convicted' means that God is making someone face things in his life that are bad, and usually painful. You've heard of 'sweeping things under the rug'? Sometimes God pulls it back out and makes you face it and deal with it.

The Bible calls itself a 'sword' in several places. The reason for this is that sometimes the truth of it can cut straight through your heart and into your soul. Sometimes when my pastor speaks on Sunday mornings, it seems like he's speaking directly to me, like he's been hiding in my shirt pocket all week and knows what I've been doing and even thinking.

Another way to think of it is that being 'convicted' in the spirit is just like in a courtroom -- you're being called out for what you've done in your life.

This is what I'm thinking, actually. And most of the time that's exactly what it means.
