The reasons for developing diabetes include family history of diabetes, obesity, physical stress, use of certain medicines, injury to pancreas, autoimmune disease, hypertension, elevated blood cholesterol, age, smoking, alcohol and pregnancy.[/FONT]

Smoking 16 to 25 cigarettes per day increases the risk of developing diabetes to three times that of a non smoker. Smoking not only increases the risk of developing the disease but also makes it difficult to manage diabetes for those who already have it. Smoking combined with diabetes may lead to retinopathy, stroke, heart disease, vascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and foot problems.[/FONT]
