The relation between diabetes and smoking give smokers another reason to quit smoking. Besides the innumerable diseases that smoking causes, diabetes is another disease added to the list.

Diabetes is a disease related to the pancreas which is an organ behind the stomach. The function of pancreas is to release fluid called insulin into the bloodstream. Insulin helps to bring into use the sugars and fats obtained from food consumed. A person develops diabetes when the pancreas either does not make insulin or doesn’t make enough quantity of it. Diabetes is also developed if the insulin doesn’t work properly. Diabetes can further cause complications like eye disease, kidney disease, heart disease and nerve disease. The reasons for developing diabetes include family history of diabetes, obesity, physical stress, use of certain medicines, injury to pancreas, autoimmune disease, hypertension, elevated blood cholesterol, age, smoking, alcohol and pregnancy.

Research proves that smoking increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Smoking 16 to 25 cigarettes per day increases the risk of developing diabetes to three times that of a non smoker. Smoking not only increases the risk of developing the disease but also makes it difficult to manage diabetes for those who already have it. Smoking combined with diabetes may lead to retinopathy, stroke, heart disease, vascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and foot problems.

The probability of developing diabetes increases if combined with smoking and other risk factors are also present. Immediate Help to stop smoking must be sought after before further complications arise.
