It seems my wife's Dell laptop has malfunctioned. It won't start up correctly and voluntarily started its "Diagnostic" test. Perusing the results noted the computer failed to detect its hard drive. Does this mean the hard drive is a goner? If so, how complicated is it to install a new hard drive on a laptop if one isn't exactly an IT guru? Would it be easier to just buy a new damn laptop? Thanks.

Honestly there is about a 90% chance it's dead. Installing a new hard drive isn't difficult, you can look up the tech manual on your laptop through Dell and see how to replace it. The hard part is getting all of your software back on the new hard drive, unless of course you have some kind of restore CD.

It is, or should I say, was running XP. I guess I need the Dell CD as it has drivers, etc on it. Oh yea, I also will need Office but I can get that from work for like $20.
