We always have options, even if Detroit or some other team trades up to get Peppers.

It really depends on how creative Hurney-Fox-Richardson want to be.

Honestly I think a Sims and a Buchanon = one Julius Peppers.

If Peppers is gone, we could use that pick (number 2 overall) and trade down into the 1st round, and pick up a 2nd round pick.
Then we could send both our number 2 picks to someone for another number 1.

Of course I'm always the advocate for drafting 2nd round players, we potentially have three picks in the 1st round (with a little creative bargaining.)

A starting OLB, DT, and CB would be very very very sweet.

    Simms and Buchanon= one Peppers?

    Make that a MAJOR concussion!

I don't get it, why do you people think this kid is in the Hall of Fame already?
Peppers is NOT that much head & shoulders above the rest. In fact, many don't agree that he is the best in the draft class...and I am not talking about Kiper, cuz he does elevate Peppers to that distinction.
Agreed, he would be a good pick at #2, but there are other needs that need to be filled as well and a trade down would help us greatly in filling those needs baring any FA acquisitions.

Well, he is the best athlete. Best football player.....eh, he's got some work to do.

But it's not often that a 285 lb, 6'6 DE can run a 4.5 40. In fact, I can't figure any that can.

As a player, he's got work to do. He needs to learn some technique, some hand fighting, and not just get frustrated when someone shuts him down a few plays.

I swear, NC fans, with the talent you have had on the defensive line, why are your guys always so raw. Something is up with coaching down there.

The real question is, are we willing to spend money up front, and invest the time, and gamble that in at least a couple of years, we'll have a dominating impact player on our line at the base end position. Or do we want to trade down and look for a somewhat safer choice with less upside.

Also you have to look at it this way, McFly.

Simms, a one gap DT. Not really an anchor vs the run, though he could be eventually. But he isn't now. A great first step, but can be shut down if you can take his first shot.

Buchanon - A very good cover corner, but small. Will he be able to handle physical recievers at the NFL level?

Both have thier own inherent risks.

As does Peppers, Piper (try saying that three times real fast!).

There is no point in comparing something that is not really comparable was my point. Different positions, different styles, etc...just cant compare them in that light.

For the most part, a first rounder is a first rounder in my book. Pretty much anyone in the top 20 is generally at that talent level to be an immediate impact, or at least should be. Beyond that it becomes a bit of a crap shoot.

You'd hope so, but that's not often the case at all.

If you look back, the one thing you get with a top 5 pick is a good chance that player will become a solid starter in at least two years. Not a guarantee, but most.

There was a huge difference between a Marcus Stroud and a Richard Seymour in terms of development. Seymour was a 6, Stroud at 13. Stroud has a good deal of ability to become a great player, but he isn't yet. Seymour became a solid starter, perhaps not a star, but a solid starter, from the get go.

Looking just at last years draft, picks 2 to 6 were all at least solid, with Vick developing. After that, it gets more iffy. At least we got a guy who was a competent starter, and not a benchwarmer like Reynolds, David Terrell or Stroud.

I mean, would the Browns trade Gerrard Warren (#3 overall) for Damione Lewis (#12) and Ryan Pickett (#29)? Doubtful.

I want to trade down but not anywhere out of the top ten. I'm kind of hoping for a team like the Chargers to trade up to get McKinnie and we take their 5th pick and additional picks. That way we still have a good chance of getting Jammer and pick up an extra pick along the way. But if we were to trade out of the the Top 10 or 15 there likely wouldn't be anyone worth picking that fills a major need besides maybe Buchanon.

By immediate impact I don't necessarily mean a starter. Just a significant contributor when called upon. Many first rounders outside of the top ten don't start, but the play in situations that suit them while they develop in other areas.
Some, like Terrell, don't see much time because of the intense difference in playbook that they experience at the pro-level. When Terrell did play on a limited playbook...he played well.
Then if you take a guy like Stroud, who I don't know that he was really expected to start with both Walker and Payne there, he has time to develop and I would expect him to be much improved this year as he has had time to learn the system.
In reality, like everything else, this too is relative.

Wide recievers usually take a year to adjust to a Pro system, but for a while, he wasn't even the #3. Guys had to get hurt before he even saw the field. And then he had dropitis.

Anyway, the point is the plus side of keeping a top 5 pick is that they are somewhat less likely to bust than a 10-20 pick. The top 5 busts all stick in our head, because they get paid far too much money. That's true. But your just as likely to crap out twice with a 12 and a 20 as you are a #2.

It's all a poker game, or at least black jack. If you get 2 tens, do you double? I do.

If I get 2 10's I always split em. Just to piss off the guy next to me!

I am pickin up what your puttin' down though.
