the trade-down idea works if you can be assured of getting your guys at CB and d-line. that's the only way i'd do it, really.

if they want a hometown boy, sims will still be around. :)

    The problem with trading down

I'm feeling pretty good that Fox will be able to go whatever direction he wants in the 2nd round without trading. I'm feeling good that we'll have a really strong OLB in Fischer, a couple of decent HB options, and perhaps even a decent CB slide into the 2nd round.

This draft is unusual, two or three TEs could go in the first round, two or three HBs could go in the first round, two QBs could go in the 1st round, at the most one safety.

And that doesn't include suprise picks. If you'll remember, no one thought Janikowski was worth a number 1 pick (probably not even worth a number 2.) His selection forced several talented bodies into the 2nd round.

The problem with trading down is no one really wants to trade up, and there is only one team on the market (at least at the moment) that has two picks.
For our position, I think we should get at least a top 15, and a top 25.....and Oakland definitely doesn't fit that bill.

I suggested Indy as possibility, and on another board, at the exact same time, someone else did to.

I'd have to strongly consider a deal that got us Rhodes, #11 overall, an additional second round pic, and maybe someting in 2003. Maybe even a 2003 first rounder or second rounder. That's about the right value.

Tell ya what, we get their pick, they get ours, and we swap starting Quarterbacks!

With Grbac retiring, the Bengals may want to move up for Harrington. I doubt they'd give up Dillon (or that we could afford him capwise), but Spikes and Simmons are on the block.

Trading with them keeps us in the top 10 to grab a DT, DE, CB, or William Green at RB (WTF up with Green's 40 time though?) Throw in their 2nd at 43 and we have a good OLB and three picks in the top 43 to fill holes. Any other picks we could get from them are gravy.Works for me.

Not a bad scenario at all. Of course everyone is going to bring up Jason Peter and say, "How can you pass on a guy like Peppers?"

Honestly, I think you could put Marshall Faulk at HB, WR, and Offensive Coordinator for us last season, and we wouldn't have gotten to the playoffs.

We just need better players, and better depth, in about 4 critical areas. The best way to do that is trading down and getting more picks.

Bengals keep saying they'll go with Kitna and Smith. Whatever. I'd like Harrington. They do need a corner, though, but I'm not sure I'd trade up for him.

It's early, and a weak FA year will bring prices down though..

Boy, Kitna, that's a name associated with big wins.

Seriously though, I think the Beagles (sic) could compete hard in the AFC North if they get a decent QB.

If they don't trade for Bledsoe, I'd be shocked if they didn't pursue Harrington.

The idea I like best is trading with someone in the top 5, and still getting Peppers. Maybe pick up a 2nd or a 3rd round pick in the process.

We wouldn't get Peppers if we trade down. Neither Detroit or Buffalo would pass on him. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if Detroit were to trade up to get Peppers. The Texans would assume a slight risk, but more than likely still get Carr...plus more picks.
Any trade down would eliminate any chance at Peppers. And might limit our chance at Jammer or Buchanon if we go past #10. I think Jammer will be top five, Buchanon top ten.
I like the idea of a deal with the Raiders for #21 and #23, granted that puts us out even further...but two first rounders and cheap ones at that.

Way I see it there's one problem with the trade down. The DEs we could get at 34 aren't the value of the CBs, and the DE value at 2 is much greater than CB. So we really oughta stay cautious until the last minute...but if we can't trade down (and I feel a trade made before we can deal will keep us from dealing) and we don't have Peppers, we could be seriously screwed.
