  1. So what underqualified white players are not in the league?

    COCHRAN HAS NO CLIENT

There's a minor flaw in the plans outlined by Johnnie Cochran to sue the NFL for race discrimination on behalf of coaches who are overlooked for and/or unfairly dropped from head coaching jobs.

    He has no client.

Let's repeat that. He has no client.

You see, the legal system isn't a playground for lawyers to push their own little personal causes. Instead, the lawyer must first be hired by someone who allegedly has been injured by the conduct of another.

And, in this case, we doubt that Cochran will find a client, much less a class action.

Why? Although publications like USA Today are quick to compare the potential claim to discrimination suits against corporations like Texaco and Coca-Cola, there's a huge difference here.

Football coaches, white or black, are far more interested in coaching football than in suing the folks who might give them their next opportunity to coach football. For example, would Denny Green want to derail his chances of getting back in the game by filing suit against the league for the shabby treatment he received from the Vikings? (And by "shabby treatment," we mean "multi-million-dollar contract buyout.")

Really, would any coach who hopes to continue to coach football sue over this?

We're not saying that Cochran's claims don't have merit. But, at the same time, folks who sue Texaco or Coke can still find another job in their chosen field. NFL coaches who sue the NFL might legitimately be concerned that there will be lingering difficulties.

And, sure, it's illegal to retaliate against folks who pursue claims of race discrimination. But having a job is far more important to most folks than having a lawsuit.

So Cochran can crow all he wants. But unless he can persuade an NFL coach to risk flushing his career, Johnnie will be representing NFL types only when they decide to slice and/or dice a former wife and her friend.

Cochran's arguing there should be a quota for blacks based upon their percentage of the population. If he's right, why shouldn't there be a quota for whites based upon their portion of the population? Promoting a racist solution to percieved racism is still racism. Cochran's just after another big money shakedown from some one who has major bucks, don't let the fact he takes home a large chunk of change each time he files one of these suits cloud your judgement.
