Best of luck to Benny if this pans out for him! He's a tireless worker and will be successful.

Seahawks like what they see in Moss
Charlotte assistant may be offered UNCW coaching job today

By Neil Amato, Sports Editor, The Wilmington Star-News

It didn’t take Charlotte assistant Benny Moss very long to impress the UNC-Wilmington men’s basketball coaching search committee.

Moss received a unanimous recommendation from the four-person committee after meeting with them Tuesday. Athletic director Mike Capaccio could choose to follow their wishes and offer Moss the job as early as today.

Moss could not be reached on his cell phone Tuesday night.

WDAY-TV of Fargo, N.D., reported Tuesday night that North Dakota State coach Tim Miles said he expected UNCW to come to a decision either late Tuesday or early today. Miles said he had not been offered the job nor had he decided whether he would accept it.

Vaughn Duggins, formerly the top recruit for next season’s team, took a look at the facilities at Wright State on Tuesday. He may be joining former Sea-hawks coach Brad Brownell in Dayton, Ohio; he will not be attending UNCW.

A school spokesman said Tuesday that Duggins, a 6-3 guard from Pendleton, Ind., had asked for and received a release from his national letter of intent. Duggins signed with UNCW in November but elected to leave after Brownell took the job at Wright State.

Duggins, the second-leading prep scorer in the state of Indiana, had to make a written request to UNCW to be released from his letter of intent. UNCW sports information director Joe Browning said Duggins had been granted his release.

Browning said that, to his knowledge, no current players had sought to transfer from UNCW, which has gone 19 days without a basketball coach.

The school has conducted interviews with five candidates, two of whom pulled out last week. The others remaining are former UNCW assistant Byron Jones, who interviewed earlier this week and Miles, who interviewed last week.

Search committee votes for Moss, WECT, TV

Tuesday was Benny Moss's 36th birthday. He could end up getting a late gift.

WECT Sports has learned that the Charlotte assistant received a unanimous vote of reccommedation by the UNCW search Committee on Tuesday.

While the committee made the recommendation, the name that is passed on for approval is ultimately up to Athletic Director Mike Capaccio.

The Committee felt that of the candidates interviewed Moss was by far the best, and they were impressed with his academic integrity as well as his knowledge of the area and region.

Moss was the latest head coaching candidate to meet the masses, and the whirlwind day left an impression with some who are close to the program.

Moss began the day meeting with Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, then spoke with Senior Officials of the Athletic Department. After a break for lunch Moss spoke privately with UNCW Athletic Director Mike Capaccio before meeting with members of the team around five o'clock. Moss wrapped up the visit with dinner along side Special Assistant to the Chancellor Max Allen.

No meetings are scheduled for Wednesday.

In his five years on the 49ers bench Charlotte has won two League Titles, posted three 20 win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times.

Before coming to Charlotte Moss was an assistant under Bobby Lutz at Pfeiffer where he finished his playing career. He's also had coaching stints at Phillips University and Henderson State.

Moss is the fifth candidate interviewed for the vacancy. He along with North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles and former UNCW assistant Byron Jones are the only candidates still under consideration. Texas assistant Rodney Terry and Kansas assistant Joe Dooley have withdrawn their names.

The position became available when Brad Brownell stepped down on March 31st to become the head coach at Wright State.

Sources: UNCW close to new head basketball coach, WWAY-TV
    April 19, 2006 10:35 AM EDT

WILMINGTON-- The search for UNCW's next men's basketball coach may be close to coming to an end.

UNC-Charlotte assistant coach Benny Moss interviewed for the job Tuesday. He has spent the last six years on the 49ers staff. Sources close to the program tell NewsChannel 3 that the search committee considers Moss the most impressive candidate so far and they have recommended him to Athletic Director Mike Capaccio.

Moss is the fifth person who has interviewed to replace Brad Brownell.

North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles, and former Seahawk assistant Byron Jones also are still under consideration.

Miles has told WDAY-TV in Fargo, North Dakota he has not been offered the job yet but did expect to hear something soon, possibly Wednesday. Miles also said he's not positive he would accept the Seahawk post even if it was offered.

Stay tuned to WWAY NewsChannel 3 for the latest on this developing story.

I think Brownell just didn't get along with the AD and that's why he left for Wright State.
