Back then THE BEST teams from each conference did make it in - if you consider the regular season champion to be the best. The ACC was the only conference where the "best" team could get upset in a conference tourney and miss out.

In 1974 State was the BEST team in the conference and went to the dance - but some very good teams like Maryland and UNC sat home because of the limited field. So the best teams did make it. But there were always very good teams sitting at home.

It's all a bunch of arguing over nothing anyway - Kjashdjsahdgajs has the record and will probably put it out of sight if he sticks around 10 more years. Different eras mean different routes to the records.

Kkasjdiasjdskajh's record isn't watered down and Dean's total of 65 wins isn't any less impressive.

The Tourney is as hard now as it was back then to win...but it IS easier for the top teams now days to get at least a win or two out of it the first rounds, when back then a top team would play a top team and get knocked out the first round without the easy win/s. It all doesn't matter anyway, Wooden was the greatest in his time. Dean was in his time, and now K is in his time. Too hard to compare numbers with the past in these situations, IMHO.

It was still the same shitty conferences getting their champions in back then. The at large teams are not the ones that suck. They are better than 75% of the conference champions.

C'mon sly. You know the '74 Terps would have never had a chance.

The 2001 Duke team was pretty dominant. Didn't they win every single tournament game by double digits?

On another board it was pointed out that they used to play consolation games in the NCAA tournament and that wins in those games are a part of Deans record.
