So it expands from 32 to 64,now 65, so basically one more game except for the play in teams.

So you are telling me you would rather have 5 tough games than 4 easier games and 2 tough games?

considering you one could get in by simply winning your conferance tournament, one could argue that the smaller fields of the past had a stronger potential for being diluted

Agreed, with the smaller format there was no guarantee any of the best teams were in the tournament. they are guaranteed to be in there now.

Prior to the expansion of the field, All of the invitees were the Conference Champions. Oh, make that Regular season champions to boot. Up until the expansion of the NCAA field in 78 -79, the ACC was pretty much the only conference that decided its Champion based on a tournament.

So it was harder for the best team to make it to the big dance back then? So Dean or other coaches had less of a chance to get those wins prior to expanding the field?

You really need to figure out which side of this argument you guys want to go at it with and stay on that side.

I'm being perfectly consistant in my belief that a bigger tournament is a more difficult one.

And I believe what Vito said. I still believe that while it was definately harder to get into it in the past it is more difficult to win now. I've never argued against the point that there were less games for accumulating victorys. Only that it is more difficult to win a bigger tournament.

Always been hard as hell to win. What is missing over the last few years are the truly dominant teams. Hell, I can't think of the last "Great" team to win the championship. It's been a long freakin' time since there was such an animal in the NCAA's.
