Coach K not amused by illustration

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Star newspaper has apologized to Duke University after some of Friday's editions included an illustration of coach Mike Krzyzewski with horns and a target drawn on his head.

The illustration on the front of the sports section accompanied a story titled "Despising Duke" that detailed how some fans strongly dislike the Blue Devils' program.

Jim Lefko, the Star's senior editor/sports, said the paper pulled the illustration "when we realized it didn't meet our standards."

"It was an illustration that should have come together earlier than it did," Lefko said.

He estimated the drawing appeared in fewer than 30,000 copies of the edition distributed statewide. He said he apologized Friday morning to Duke officials, who said they hadn't yet seen the illustration.

But when Krzyzewski took the podium Friday afternoon, he had, and he was not amused.

"First thing I thought, 'That can't be," Krzyzewski said. "How could a newspaper do that? That's like somebody doodled. Actually, I thought I looked better. But it was kind of juvenile. Not kind of. Just juvenile. And my seven grandkids didn't enjoy looking at it. 'It's not Poppy.'

"It is what it is. It's very juvenile," he continued. "We have great kids who go to school, who graduate. If we're going to be despised or hated by anybody because we go to school and we want to win, you know what, that's your problem. Then you have a problem, because we're going to go to school and we're going to try to win. You don't like it? Keep drawing .

It is nice to see Duke back on top and to see all the haters come out again...

you mean all us haters that were hating when they weren't on top the last six years? I don't think our tune has ever changed. Why should it? I don't recall the ABC crowd ever rallying around the UNC flag when they won two final fours the last five yreas. It's a rivalary - both sides hate each other - deal with it

 

On;y an insecure prima donna would give that article a second of attention. You guys ought to be sending thank you notes to teams that knocked Kentucky, Syracuse and Kansas out. You took care of your business but still.

 

You Carolina fans will always be haters but this was not in a paper from around here.......

How should we be less thought of because the other 3 #1's couldn't hold their own? I remember UNC's games last year weren't really against that stellar of competition. Gonzaga & Oklahoma last year in the 2nd week? Geez. Purdue and Baylor from this year would've beat those two teams as well. It's always been about matchups and now that people can't fuss about how WV should've been better than Duke, they all have to turn their attention to what teams aren't there. They aren't there for a reason. They couldn't beat the teams they played. Duke did. What's always with all the saying like if this or this would've happened.. I guess in 07, Kansas should be glad that Davidson knocked out the 2nd seed Georgetown and the 3 seed Wisconsin right? That's absurd to use that argument that because another 1 seed couldn't win then that just means Duke or any1 else should feel less accomplished about winning it all. Besides it isn't like Duke would've faced Kansas or Syracuse until tomorrow night so what's the argument there?
