I was halfway through the movie at Stonecrest a few minutes ago, when they evacuated the theater due to a water main break. Sux...'cause it was getting real good. My 10 year old was with me and he wasn't scared.

I saw it too and then looked online and read that it was a satellite that was referenced earlier in the movie as having crashed into the ocean, and in an interview somewhere J.J. Abrahms said the monster had been at the bottom of the ocean for thousands of years. Putting 2 and 2 together the company trying to recover their satellite woke the monster up.

Also, if you stay through the credits there is a radio message, which I couldn't understand. However, also online folks are saying that (spoiler)

    it's still alive

    or something to that effect.

BTW, I thought it was really good, tense and intense at times. My wife liked it all the way through the movie but didn't like the ending, which I thought was the cherry on top.

Larry, what did you find illogical about the characters actions? I only found a few instances where I questioned the plausible nature of a characters actions. For instance, when the army even takes time to listen to the main character tell them about his girlfriend still being alive or when the army guy pointed them in the right direction. In reality I think they would have been almost completely ignored.

The one big problem I had is when Hud dies and Rob takes time to grab the video camera and take it with him.<--Highlight spoiler text.

I was laughing when that happened, the crunching noise got me, so I didn't really think to hard about it at the time.

    let's see...going BACK for a dead girl?

why not go search for your brother?

why would all the other people go with him to look for the girl?

you see what they saw on TV in the shop -- the flesh-eating spawn bugs -- why the hell wouldn't you RUN THE OTHER WAY!!!!!

hell, you see the monster -- RUN THE OTHER WAY!!!!!

there's no way they survived the helicopter crash, either.

PUT DOWN THE CAMERA while you're jumping from one building to the other 50 stories above the city and 10 stories above the monster.

    i mean, come on.

and the sappy reuniting. and de-impaling of her. she sure ran well for a gal who had just been impaled on something for hours.

    the whole thing was ridiculous.

but it was a FUN ride once you turned off your brain.

There wouldn't have been much of a movie if they hadn't done those things.

    SPOILER***

Watched it last night. I loved it. Not my favorite of all time or anything, but I though it was very original and clever. Shoot a 250 million dollar movie through a home video camera (not that they really did) but the concept was excellent. You can drive plot holes though a lot of it, but like I always say, when you try to justify sci-fi movies you just end up sounding dumb. It's impossible, so just deal with it.

It is basically Blair Witch with Godzilla. I didn't like that. I thought the ending was fitting, although again if they nuked Manhattan how did the camera survive? Oh well. I didn't like that the monster was able to sneak up on them when they were in the park since he made all the noise before. Kinda Godzilla like there, that sucked. The little spawns were wusses and the main monster could take on missles and tank artillery. That didn't make sense. The statue of liberty part was probably the coolest and I can see why they put it in the trailer. The monster was a little lame, but oh well. I give it 4 stars and would say definitely see it. But I don't need to see it again.

how can you in one breath laud the film for it's originality, then pan it for being blair witch meets godzilla?

    i agree -- see it, but not a re-see.

and i think the plot holes are valid. like i said, i can buy in to the whole alien monster attacks a city thing. i'm there. i'm ok with that leap. that's the definition of sci-fi.

my problem is that if they purposely turn it into a first-person film and make us take on the actions of hud, then hud has to do things that we'd do. otherwise there's just too large of a disconnect. that's where the film loses me. you can see how LONG they spent at the party trying to get your buy-in. then they throw all that away over the course of the film.

    ah, well...
