Has anyone checked it out? Reviews are good and I skipped Civ III so I'm not all that tired of the series.

yeah, i'm seriously thinking of getting it...i was a huge Civ2 freak, and played alpha centauri quite a bit, so this should be the next logical step. Civ 3 was a bastard child that didn't have Sid Meier working on it from what i recall, I didn't bother with it.

That's pretty much the attitude I had towards 3. I played way, way, way too much of Civ 2 and Sid's first Railroad Tycoon. When I was in college I had to get my GF to delete RR Tycoon from my hard drive and take the disks so I could finish up one semester.

I would say a big part of it is that - for a time - it had to be THE best game for single gamers. The first one was good. Really good. The second one was great. The replay value was incredible. The problem was the games took fucking forever.

i get bored too easily. i just don't have the patience for that kind of game. the last single player game i enjoyed was baldur's gate 2. oh wait. i take that back. half life 2 was pretty good too, but i got bogged down for a few months where i didn't touch it.

I only played III. But yeah, games were epic. Weeks long unless you played it from midnight to sun up, which I've done a time or two. Fucking geek.

They've automated a bunch of things that made previous version slow down. You can automate your builders, miners, etc. to make roads, railroads, explore, etc. so you don't get bogged down in the minutia and you can focus on the actual gameplay. I am just getting started with it and it rules. I fear this may take away from my poker time...
