I think Sullivan has let his being gay get in the way here. I respect him as an intellect, but having something about gays in about every other paragraph shows his reasoning here. Seems to me he's saying it's ok to opt out on any of a religion's teachings you disagree with and you're none the worse for it and any one who abides totally by the moral code put forth is something totally unacceptable. He's using politics as a way to shield himself from being criticized. This isn't coming from a Bible thumper either.

It is not just gays that try to exclude the sinful behaviour they like from condemnation in christianity. I think most people would be christians if they could pick two or three things they could change to suit themselves in it. The jews were happy to cross the red sea and elude Pharoah but they were not so keen on the ten commandments and getting rid of the golden calf.

I agree--anyone of conscience should stand up for what they believe in. I don't have a problem with people doing what they believe is right, politically or otherwise. I do have a problem with people who adopt a holier-than-thou attitude & expend their energy on criticizing & condemning those who hold different views. I see a ton of that on all sides of the political spectrum. It would be so much more constructive to have civil discussion & debate. It frustrates the hell out of me that most people can't seem to do that.

Good article, good thread, good discussion.
