Precisely why I don't talk about this stuff with my folks anymore. My mom would be the "heartbroken" one, and there's no telling how my dad, a Mason, would react. Sometimes I suspect they might already know; if they do they haven't said anything directly about it yet.

Here's their perspective on it, from one of the primary sources:

    THE NINE SATANIC STATEMENTS
    by Anton LaVey

    1. Satan represents indulgence, instead of abstinence!

    2. Satan represents vital existence, instead of spiritual pipe dreams!

    3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom, instead of hypocritical self-deceit!

    4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!

    5. Satan represents vengeance, instead of turning the other cheek!

    6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible, instead of concern for psychic vampires!

    7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse that those that walk on all-fours, and who, because of his "divine spiritual and intellectual development," has become the most vicious animal of all!

    8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, and emotional gratification!

    9. Satan has been the best friend the church ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years!

    ------

Take it as you will. That should give you a sense of their take on it.

Yep, it illustrates why I don't care for "organized" Satanism as a life philosophy/religion. Narcissism and selfishness codified.

Do those things not contradict one another? If selfishness and self indulgence are held up as ideals then why would you be kind or responsible towards anyone?

That's part of why it wasn't a perfect fit. For me, that is. It was what I needed at the time, but by nature I have more of a sense of honor about myself. So it didn't completely stick.

Rational self-interest need not mean wanton cruelty to others. It's just a way of saying reasonable people who aren't jerks get a fair shake, and those who cross you get the horns. I've found that's the way most people live anyway, and is hardly evil per se.

If that is the only thing satanism has to offer it seems shallow to me. Why not just be non religious and do what ever you think is right at the time?

I don't think Satan would mind as long as you chose that way or his way...there both the same destination.
