INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP, NFL.com) - Former East Carolina running back Chris Johnson put up the fastest 40-yard dash time of the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine, running it in 4.24 seconds Sunday.

Johnson outpaced Arkansas' Darren McFadden, who ran it in 4.33 seconds.

His mark tied the all-time mark registered at the Indianapolis combine. Rondel Melendez, a wide receiver for Eastern Kentucky, recorded the previous best in 1999 -- the first year the combine used electronic timers.

Johnson, one of the nation's most versatile players, led Conference USA with 2,960 all-purpose yards as a running back, receiver and kick returner. If his production hadn't already done so, Johnson's record-tying speed in Indianapolis essentially assures him of being the first senior running back selected, and a spot in the top two rounds.
    Running Back Top 40 Times
    Johnson, Chris - 4.24
    McFadden, Darren - 4.33
    Alridge, Anthony - 4.36
    Charles, Jamaal - 4.38
    Simpson, Chad - 4.42
    Mendenhall, Rashard - 4.45
    Forte, Matt - 4.46
    Jones, Felix - 4.47
    Parmele, Jalen - 4.47
    Stewart, Jonathan - 4.48

The combine is big for him, but he really earned himself a lot of money by single-handedly destroying Boise State.

Hard to believe someone could run a 40 that fast.

That 40 time at the combine will make him a lot of money. Great speed, shifty, but has been known to put it on the ground.

NFL coaches can teach you to hold on to the ball. They can't teach 4.24 speed.
