Or better yet, take a swab and look at it under a microscope. If you see high counts of staphylococcus, prescribe antibiotics. If you don't, give it more time before prescribing something that is only going to contribute, in its own small way, to resistant strains. I work in health care and this is a very hot topic now. This old doctor's habit of prescribing antibiotics offhand is changing.

Mucinex (not the DM) loosens up phlegm so you can cough it out easier. Increase your water intake when you take it; it works better if you are not dehydrated.

Cause all the old doctors are dying, give me an old school doc any day.

I also think it depends heavily on the patient.....

If you have someone who is frequently visiting the doctor for routine things they could treat at home, someone who enjoys going to the doctor etc... they should hold off on them because no dobut, they'll be back next week whether they are well or not. If it isn't that, it will be something. It's also likely they frequently have antibiotics or meds of some sort.

On the other hand, if you have someone who is rarely at the doc, takes minimal meds, and is too busy to spend time going to the doc, it's better to give them something because they may not come back.
It's about a patient being compliant and what the doc could get sued for these days, not what's best for the patient and community.

    Thanks Billary.

Of all things, I can't take this stuff. Pisses me off.

I have tried it several times and I get a migraine, I finally narrowed it down to what it was causing it. I just don't get headaches much.....

    GUIAPHENESIN is the same thing.

i have been to the dr <5X in the past 8 years. i rarely take any symptom suppressing over the counter medication. he could have taken a swab, sent it to his lab and gotten back to me. instead he took the easy way out. SFW.

I've found that, as a smoker, Mucinex is a lifesaver. Lots of chest colds set up deep in the lungs and start up an infection. If it doesn't have time to set up good and thick, the infection will not be able to get started. Any time I feel a lot of chest congestion coming on, I take 1 Mucinex every 12 hours for 3 days and I can cough that crap out so much easier- therefore not requiring a doctors appointment or antibiotics.

If I have a big assed cold I take Mucinex D. It whips my colds ass. Clears me up and helps me cough it out.

Am I the only one who keeps a spit cup in my truck when I've a cold? I switch it out every other day. It's disgusting.

my mee-maw used to boil a big pot of cabbage and make me breathe in the steam. she also held a towel over my head while i did this. she also dipped Tube Rose snuff from a glass jar and fixed her own home made apple jelly.
