I am not a Yankees or a Red Sox fan (I do favor the Red Sox due to the UNCC ties with Grady Little), but let me just say that Pedro did nothing wrong yesterday. Steinbrenner is a freakin sissy complaining about Pedro's inside pitches. Both Jeter and especially Soriano are all over the plate diving into pitches. Hell, both pitches that hit them, they were in the process of check swinging! So all these Yankee fans bitchin about Pedro need to save it. It's about time more pitchers pitched 6-12 inches inside and keep all these hitters with armor from digging in too much. Its part of the game to keep hitters timid to dive in to the plate, and not too confident about being hit by a ball , and God bless Pedro for yesterday.

While I didn't see the plays, it sounds like they were pitches that would've made Bob Gibson smile.........and if that's the case, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with throwing inside.

Throwing at the head is wrong but backing a guy off the plate is just part of the game.

Of course in this world of spoon-fed ESPN highlights, I guess the game is forced to revolve around the guy with the stick in his hand.

AMen 86 and Metro. My fantasy would have been to raise the mound back to 15 inches and the umpires tell the hitters "get the fuck out of the way if you don't like it." Could you imagine Clemens, Johnson, Schilling, and Pedro with those luxuries? Might have helped Maddux out a little more also, pushing down more on his fastball, might have given it even more movement than it already had.

Wasn't Clemens complaining the other day about not being able to throw inside, saying guys don't get out of the way?

Hey Georgie, you weren't popular to begin with, you might want to keep your 73 year old ass in the Bronx the next time the Yanks travel to Fenway.

You know that Bob Gibson once hit one of his own players, in BATTING PRACTICE when he was a pitching coach (with the Braves I think).

Pedro throwing inside to start the game was not also to keep them off the plate, I think it was in retaliation from Clemmens hitting Mylar the day before...I've always said this though pitchers and like Clemmens and Pedro wouldn't have the balls they have in the AL if they played in the NL. (I know Pedro did some time in the NL, but now he is notorious for hitting players and I'm not much of a Clemmens fan, I was so pissed when they traded Wells for him, luckily we got Wells back.)

I think the next series between the 2 teams is going to be interesting. I expect a full retaliation from the Yanks, they just had the wrong guy on the mound for it yesterday...A nice old fashion brawl would spice things up, I think it is something the Yankees need to bring together the team more, like when Benitez hit Tino Martinez and all hell broke loose years back.

No - I mean he was actually throwing at the guy because he was pissed at him.

    2002,
the only reason I say it was NOT retaliation, was because both batters check swung, or halfway swung the bat. Usually retaliation pitches are higher and tighter than that. Pedro's ball has so much tail on it, it just got away. Look at where both of their hands were when they got hit, It was their own fault for diving in.

I do agree with you that is sucks American League pitchers never have to step in the box to get pluncked themselves.

I'll try and talk to Eric Little today and find out the deal.

Pedro was known as a headhunter all through his Expo years. He had problems controlling his fastball. He was like Jaret Wright, only Pedro ended up fixing the problem. He had a perfect game through nine innings in 1994 and hit a guy in the tenth, and that dude charged the mound. I'm pretty sure Pedro and the Expos ended up losing that game.

Trust me, Pedro has done his thing in the National League.
