    Where'd you live? My parents owned a unit in the same building when i was a kid, sold it 15 years ago.

    They tore down the oceanfront part of carolina temple apartments next door. Building about $6 million in condos.

    Meier Street..pretty much across from the Surf Motel. right on the corner,not where the green thing on the map is. maybe closer to 1/2 a mile away.

    If monthly renting is 40-50% cheaper than the same house purchased, you can easily invest the difference per month and pull 12%/yr, as well as not pay the interest on the loan, no fees, maintenance, taxes, or insurance. Under certain conditions, the returns from ownership are worse than other opportunities available, such as the international stock market or even an index fund. You can turn the 50-60k you would use as a down payment as well as an additional 600-1200$/month into a significant chunk of change relative to the equity you establish after fees and interest on a loan.
