God, ESPN is already doing it. I was wondering when they would start saying how the Celtics-Lakers is the greatest rivalry possibly ever and they have started. Saying that it's one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports...ummm if everyone under the age of 25 has no recollection of their previous matchups and they haven't matched up in the Finals in over 20 years then I'd say it's not much of a rivalry. Sorry, had to vent

Nobody under 25 watches NBA anyway. It's a pretty good rivalry.

But it's going to be a great matchup. This is what the NBA needed. I wouldnt put the Celtics-Lakers rivalry ahead of Red Sox-Yankees or Dook/UNC, but its a fairly significant rivalry when it was at its' zenith. But thats the thing about the NBA, there are no true rivalries anymore and maybe the revival of such a great rivalry will create some comradarie among other teams.

The last time the Celtics and Lakers were in the finals was 21 years ago. Can anybody name the starting five for both squads?

I'll take a stab at it...

    Celtics:

    DJ
    Danny Ainge
    Larry Bird
    Kevin McHale
    Robert Parrish

    Lakers

    Magic
    Byron Scott
    AC Green
    Worthy
    Kareem

Dan, you're on the nose. But I could have sworn Michael Cooper was a starter during the finals.

Cooper and AC Greene at times rotated as the 6th man.

Bench? Greg Kite, bill Walton, Rick Carlisle, Jerry Sichting, that's off the top of my head.

They've won 30 of 61 NBA titles. I remember Elgin Baylor and Jerry West crying when the Lakers finally beat the Celtics in the finals in 85, even though they had been retired 15 years.

It's been a long damn time, but there's still a lot of old hatred among the old timers. Paul Pierce leading the "Beat LA" was straight out of the 80s. Up til 1987, it was a better rivalry than UNC-Duke.
