My dad is a Mary freak as are most big catholics. I don't agree with most anything he believes in but I am glad he's Catholic and not the snake handling type.

the 10 commandments are old testament... before christians and before catholics and before Jesus took part in the most symbolic event in Christianity

It is not like the Catholic church decided at some point later in history to start depicting Christ on the cross. That symbolism started up after the crucifiction. There really wasn't any other denomination to do otherwise until nearly 1500 years later.

actually one does not pray to the statue. The statues are there partially to educate, an partially to help one try to conceptualize the being that is to be addressed by the prayer. One usually asks the saints to intercede with god in your behalf. One never worships those other than god. The images of christ on the cross are there to remind you of his sacrifice for your sins. I guess if you want to have a reason to break away from the mother church, you can make something out of most any aspect of catholicism however that reason would be baseless in the long term scheme of things. Sort of the reasoning of thelts stupid leave if you don't like the rulings of the church elders. Social conflict is healthy for a religion and working things out within the group can only lead to a stronger more truthful faith.

Granted, but I've been to Catholic masses and there is a lot of kneeling done in front of those statues, and most were not Jesus. Even if the church doesn't assign supernatural values to the sculptures (which is arguable, IMO), I think it's a dangerous road to tread. I've met a lot of Catholics who assign way too much value to inanimate objects.

I actually heard the same thing from a Catholic Sunday school teacher on another board. Cleared up a big misconception for me.

    Agreed. :)

I grew up going to mass several times a week and never experienced that. I don't think I ever saw anyone bow down except to the Jesus on the cross.
